Had my last session of the gym referral today. Another 2kg off. That’s 12 kg in the 12 weeks I’ve been going. Since I started myself it’s a total of 2st 7lb. 😊

That's great news, Shelley2310 and when you join a weigh-in, we'll be able to give you a weight loss badge to show how far you've come. The Feelgood Friday Folk will be delighted to have you join their ranks :)

Fantastic going Shelley 😁 I was thinking of applying for a 12 wk referral and you’ve inspired me to look into it further - thank you xx

It’s not free anymore, I paid £65 for the whole 12 weeks. It included pt every 2 weeks.

Ok thanks for letting me know - it’s obviously paid off for you xx

Yes definitely, I’m privately paying for the pt once a month haha. Using the money I’ve saved from giving up smoking.

Oh ok - am moving locations am going back to where I lived. I currently pay that a month! Wondered if was something to do with the NHS. Keep up the good work! 💪🏻

I was referred through my gp, so I think it’s partly funded through NHS.

How to get a gym referral?

I have asked my Gp many times and he says go join weight watchers but I can’t afford it.

Shelley2310 profile image
Shelley23102st 7lbs in reply to Princesscanrun

That’s terrible, here we have ‘one you’, they do a free 12 week WeightLoss group, 12 weeks give up smoking and 12 weeks gym referral but that isn’t free.

Hello Princesscanrun and welcome 😊

Not very helpful of your GP, especially as they could have pointed you in the direction of the NHS plan and this forum.

This will show you a list of all the forum has to offer healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... The best advice I can give is to get involved as much as possible.

Here’s today's weigh in: it's not just about listing our weights, it's about supporting each other so do take time to say a few words to the others you'll meet there. Read the opening post and it will explain all healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

This Newbie pack has all the information you need to find your way around and to get started healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Wishing you all the best and I hope you become an active member of the forum 😊

That's pretty discouraging. It seems they won't actually try to help you until it's too late.

A bit of Googling suggests that it depends what area you're in:

nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/nhs-se...

Your best bet, I would suggest, is simply to find one of the low-cost gyms in your area and do this by yourself: if you shop around you should be able to get a membership for 20 pounds a month. If it's a bit more than that, ask to see the manager and see he can offer you an arrangement. Cheap-gym marketing revolves around member retention: if you commit to a long-term plan, he'll be happy to give you a discount (assuming he has the power to do so). If you think you still can't afford it, throw the TV in the bin and tell the TV License people you ain't paying anymore.

Ultimately, there's nobody else going to fix this for you except you.

For me the low cost gyms are for the dedicated . They rarely have many good classes like Zumba or HIT nor a swimming pool. Mainly just a pile of iron work in a room . I am doing the NHS rehab programme which is 3 x 6 months and costs around the £20 a month mark and I can go to about 6 different Life Leisure gyms . This has with decent food and portion control changed my life as these gyms have pools and classes and a go to trainer .

Nice! However it seems like you've got this as part of a rehab package from the NHS?

The low-cost gyms are much, much better than they used to be 10-20 years ago. Yes, back in the day they were just sweaty, grimy rooms filled with iron. There are some big chains now with lots of brand-new equipment, proper showers, etc. True, you won't get much attention from the trainers (unless you pay extra) but ... well, that's what YouTube is for :)

Hate to say it but may be better for men as there aren't many men that do most of the classes . They tend to hang round in the gym , My husband wouldn't do a class either. I need people round me to say 'Have you booked for next week ' I watched several You Tube Zumba classes from the comfort of my sofa but never got round to copying them . Depends what works for you . I wouldn't be motivated by a slimming club either telling me what I can google but works for some .

I got on an NHS rehab programme as I had op for hiatus hernia in January and I played on the main cause which was being overweight .
