Is sugar giving me energy because I can process it quickly while carbs seem to stick (hiatus hernia) and too slow to give me the boost ?

Hi, This is my first post.

I have been on the waiting list for the 12 week nhs help course and finally am having my assessment on 20th August. Hopefully the course will start soon after. I have found that pain control and the new pregabalin I have recently started is making weight loss so much harder. I don't sleep too well but DO keep as active as possible - walking is painful but I still try to keep on the move. I tend to eat more in the evenings - in fact I don't think I have ever been 'hungry' as such but eat when I am tired. Obviously my body is craving an energy boost when I am tired, but once I start eating I can't stop!! I know my lonely life does not help and I am not a happy person. So I have joined this forum in the hope of getting support while I wait for the 12 week course to start. I go swimming 3 times a week and find that I am relatively painfree in the water. I am just too tired and can't be bothered cooking 'proper' meals just for myself - so its often stir fry. I can't eat pastries of any kind or have bad reflux. I don't eat takeaways at all. I DO often crave sweet stuff.

I just DON'T want food and really can't face it during the day, so binge in the evening. I KNOW its wrong and I've really tried to eat breakfast and lunch but am lethargic and feel ill. I am more energetic and get a lot done during the day without eating, but once I start eating I feel sapped of all energy. This happens whatever time I eat. If I eat during the day then I grind to a halt !!! Is this because my hernia is slowing down my digestive system and I am not getting the boost from the food ?? Maybe sweet stuff gets to my system quick whereas carbs take too long to process???

Can anyone help???

Hello and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum Hadlow

First of all, to help you find your way around, and enjoy all the things we have on offer, please read the Welcome Newbies Post here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Take your time to read it carefully as it has lots of information.

With regards to the specifics of your diet, you are correct in assuming that sugar will give you an instant energy boost, but this comes at a price as it contains no nutrition just calories 😕. Whilst we are not medically trained, I do know that too much of anything at one meal makes me feel bloated and lethargic. However, I would seek medical advice as this could be a symptom of another underlying issue. For further help with meal planning please see the Daily Diary (details in Newbie post above)

Hi . I was put on Lansoprazole for hiatus hernia and these tablets made me sluggish. I pushed for surgery which I had in Jan . Can now eat anything but cut down portions and joined a Paris NHS gym scheme so watch what I eat . With little effort have lost 16.5kg this year.

If you are having sugary drinks or food in the morning this could be slowing you down if it causes an insulin surge following by a crash.

I'm on pregablin too, and yes losing weight is harder but I found going low carb worked. It goes against the old 'eatwell' plate which some NHS groups are still teaching - even though the 'fats are bad and cause weigh gain' message was debunked. Low carb (not no carb) is in line with the latest research.

Don't feel bad about skipping meals either! The fancy name for it is intermittent fasting. (Look it up online!) The buzz is: try to eat all your calories in a smaller window of the day. More and more people are saying it's a great weight loss tool, and good for other metabolic markers too.

And no, imho pure sugar is NEVER better for you than a slow, complex carb (unless you are a type 1 diabetic having a full on insulin reaction.)
