23 and trying to get to a healthy weight

Hi,

I've never been slim in my life, but I recently realised I have a BMI classed as obese.

I'm aiming to lose 2.5 stone, but I've not had much chance when I've tried diets in the past.

Do any of you have recommendations of good diets to steadily lose weight?

Thank you

Char

Hi and welcome, Char :)

It's time to stop thinking diet and to start thinking healthy lifestyle.

It sounds like you have a similar problem to what I used to before I joined here. Do you know how many calories the bmi calculator advises you to eat between to be able to lose weight. When I first joined I found out I was only eating around 1000cals instead of the 2000cals we should have been eating daily before and this was the reason that I was obese, because my body thought I was starving it and was turning everything I ate into body fat to ensure it could continue and the body fat weighs more than eating the extra calories does. I checked how many calories I should have to lose weight on the bmi calculator and as soon as I started eating between the amounts advised here I started losing weight. I have now lost 2 1/2stone. Good luck with your journey.

Personally i would forget diet CharSlightly - it is a word used very badly.

Instead think of developing a new lifestyle - after all you want this to be sustainable for life. Many of us have lost many, many stones over a life time - but it can be the same stone or two being recycled.

Think about the changes you can make. It is for you to decide if you need to wean yourself off something or you can go cold turkey and just stop. As an example I no longer eat bread, potatoes, rice or pasta - I just stopped because they are all refined carbohydrates and I am very sensitive to them, sugar comes into that category too so sweets are gone and I only eat good dark chocolate, a square occasionally.

I am not trying to make out that I am a paragon of virtue, far from it but I do know I feel better without all of those things in my life.

Think about what a healthy, sustainable lifestyle would be for you and how you can move towards it.

I would also suggest that you come on here regularly to get to know people and make the most of the support.
