Hello Thisisme23 and welcome to the weight loss forum 😊 Unfortunately losing fat can be a slow business, there isn't a quick fix. But eating healthily and exercising will boost your self esteem as well as help you lose weight 😊

Here are a few suggestions for getting the most out of the forum. (Please note some of these suggestions are not available if you are using the HU App so I suggest you use the full website.)

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you 😊

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news 😊

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page 😊

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you may have a 'Newbie' badge. If you have any questions or would like a Newbie badge please just ask 😊

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Best wishes

Anna

Hello Thisisme23 and welcome.

If it is just a 'few' pounds then 6 months should be plenty of time to lose them. If its substantially more, then depending upon how much, you may find it difficult to reach your target.

Most people who succeed in the long term, start by viewing their journey as a lifestyle change and not a diet. If you do something you're not really content with (like exercising every day of the week) then eventually you will stop and not only are you back to square one but perceived wisdom suggests that you will put on even more weight.

If you take a sensible approach as laid out by Anna then you could lose 1-2 lbs a week. Over 6 months that's about 2-4 stones, which is a pretty good weight loss. Losing weight at that rate creates a mindset that is sustainable for your future.

This may not be what you want to hear but whichever path you choose I wish you all the best.

Sure, although I can only give you my limited 13 weeks experience (and I have come from a couple of decades of failing to 'diet').

On Jan 1 I found, downloaded and read the NHS 12 week plan and read it and read it so that it sunk into my goldfish memory. I ran the BMI calculator and have tried to stick to the low end of the calorie range that it suggests. To reduce the shock to the system you may want to aim for somewhere higher as those wiser than me suggest its better to be at the top end.

I still ate and drank everything I wanted but kept to my calorie limit. All I did was reduce my portion sizes. I moved to eating 3 times a day instead of once (sometimes twice). I only eat off side plates or small bowls (even if its a Sunday roast). I drink loads of water (when I'm feeling hungry and before meals). You'll find all of this in the NHS plan. I never used to eat anything without putting the calories down on paper first (not even a coffee) so I always knew how much I had left in the day. I could go on.

Oh... and review. Review each day, what you think you did right and conversely what you think you may have done wrong and adjust accordingly.

As important though is I've been stuck to this forum like glue and learnt so much and been supported so well by the most helpful people. You'll also learn from those that are doing things wrong and then you'll be inspired when they get things right.

Btw expect to have days or moments when you fail. That's life but the trick is to get back up. Same principle as falling to the ground... you wouldn't just lie there :)

Hiya

Do you want the bad news? Lose weight fast and you will VERY LIKELY gain it back plus some. We all think we will be the exception to the rule and that once we have that perfect body we will never change it.

I spent my life trying to find the quick fix for my weight and have yoyo'd around for years.

I could have saved myself 30 years of pain by altering my lifelong eating habits.

Sorry but there is no magic cure. It takes work and a real change in your lifestyle but you CAN do this.

Sorry to be a bummer but its really worth stopping and taking a breath and focusing on the healthy way to do this.

You can do this. You really can :)

The essential ingredient is planning. The reason we get to this point is because its easier to grab an unhealthy or meal we an get easily rather than a healthy one that takes some work.

So do the work up front.

Plan what you will have the next day or (even better) the next week.

Prep your food - I make 2 or 3 lunches and dinners in one go so I don't spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Go for easy options e.g. I use things like Lemon Pepper Sprinkle on seasoning for chicken, give it a quick spray with some oil and pan fry. I make a salad from different lettuce (prebagged), cucumber, snowpeas (blanched), tomato, avocado and then sprinkle over the cooled chicken. I make 3 of these and store in containers in the fridge, lunch done. I then have the same chicken for dinner a couple nights with microwaved frozen beans, frozen corn cobs (I forgot how good corn can taste microwaved) and some zapped baby potatoes. Delicious, easy to do and 3 days sorted in about an hour.

I don't drink coke or anything like that but I like having cold soda water with lemon and lime slices, ice and a couple raspberries in it when I get home. Looks lush, zero calories and feels like you're having a real treat.

I could go on but you get the idea.

Download the Myfitnesspal app and start counting calories. Yes it can be a bit boring but its necessary. After this many years I felt like I knew everything but, for example, I realised I could save 100 calories every day and swap a skinny cappuccino for a long black with a splodge of milk and use THOSE calories for my after dinner sweet treat.

this app makes it and simple and even reads barcodes from foods and converts web recipes to calories. And its free!

Get a fitness tracker if you want to get some motivation for your 10000 steps, most of them interface with the Myfitnesspal app and then you have your nutrition and exercise covered.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Thisisme23 is there a specific reason you need to loose weight fast? if it is a medical reason your dr should be guiding/monitoring you.

Otherwise - though it seems like a slog the others are right, loosing fast rarely results in keeping it off. I read somewhere this week, (can't remember where) many of us devote 3 or more years going to university to get a degree which is an investment in your future, why wouldn't you be prepared to devote a similar time to your weight loss if its a permanent investment in your health. Now I realise most people go to uni when they are young and some of us here are a lot older than that but my weight loss is very slow so I found this perspective quite affirming and motivating.

Good luck 😀
