Im a complete newbie here. I have a fair bit of weight to shift. Just wondering how you guys actually get motivated to start dieting.or calorie counting. I have read through the 12 week plan and sounds alright but how do you stick to it? I get bored easily and im a very fussy eater :/

Such a big topic. I suspect we may all have different reasons that motivated us. For me I've been trying to start a 'diet' for donkey's years and not getting more than a week or two down the line. Then I came across the 12 week plan and it just seemed to make sense.

In a sense you sound motivated that you've read that plan, joined this site and put yourself out enough to post here.

I never read the plan at all and only print off 1 week at a time. I think if I looked too far ahead I'd feel too daunted. Little steps

I don't think that fussy eating should be an issue. Different people here approach what they eat differently, finding what works for them. As for me, I eat everything I ever ate but in smaller portions, to ensure I come within my calorie limit. I haven't even stopped drinking but have had to knock it back big time.

The main thing that works for me is not to look at what I do as a diet but as a lifestyle change. Sorry if that sounds a bit cheesy but it's working for me.

I wish you all the best.

Hi Louise148 ,

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during the last few months of my pregnancy and with a family history of type 2 diabetes, I got scared that I might end up with the same at the age of 26. This made me want to make a lifestyle change that would keep me healthy and my BMI was alarming. I find it difficult to cut out certain foods for good so keeping a control over portion size is what works for me. I'm terrible at calorie counting too. Moreover being active is what I am mainly aiming to achieve.

Good luck.

I downloaded MyFitnessPal to help count calories and keep track. It's got a really nifty bar code scanner so it's quick and easy to log food and watch portion sizes .... Good luck 🌻

It sounds strange, but your head definitely has to be in the right place - something just clicks and it just becomes easier. I can only lose weight when I get into this headspace. I started logging my calories on MyFitnessPal and working out where I could cut down and did it quite gradually, rather than shocking my body! That made it much easier and sustainable. I'm only set to lose 1/2lb per week, so I can still eat quite a lot and it doesn't feel like a slog.

My biggest motivation has been my 5 year old son. I had noticed he was becoming more sedentary as I gained weight and had no energy to do things with him. Now I will suggest the park, Pokemon walks and soft play and he is now back to normal activity levels. When I was obese, I often wouldn't have the energy to suggest getting out and about all the time, although we would always go when he asked.

I love having more energy. When I think back to how tired and sluggish I was at times, I never want to go back there.

i have gradually lost mobility through being heavy and wearing out my joints. I'm very keen to get back to being able to walk all day - as I used to do - and that is providing my motivation.

My fitness pal and calorie counting is ideal for bored fussy eaters as you can eat exactly what you like ... so long as you stay in your calorie allowance. I have the same breakfast every day (no imagination at 7 a.m.) but I eat all sorts of different things for the rest of the day.

Welcome Louise148 .

Day 1 went well :) myfitnesspal is a great app!! So simple and easy to keep track of calories. Ive also not gone without either. Had a choccy hob nob with my cuppa, just the one for a change 😂 and still enough left over for a yogurt later. Feeling positive:)
