Doctor says walking doesn't help with weight loss

My doctor told me that walking doesn't work with weight loss. Its the only exercise I enjoy and doesn't put any stress on my knees. How can I make walking work for me with weight loss and how my minutes should I be walking. I nearly 17 stone in weight.

Oh no I am trying to lose weight but I seem to be slumping but I enjoy walking. Maybe adding weights into your daily routine will help. Also yoga

Your doctor doesn't know what he is talking about! Yes 80% of weight loss is down to eating less but if you are walking more you will be burning up energy. In a book called Overcoming Weight Loss a qualified dietician stated that the single most useful fitness gadget is a pedometer. I have lost 3 stone in 6 months and increasing my walking has been a big part of that.

Walking alone won't help but combined with a reduced calorie healthy diet you will lose weight. Also the National Weight Control Registry which has studied thousands of successful weight losers who have lost weight and kept it off reported that a key characteristic of these weight loss super stars was physical activity and the most common activity was walking. So there to your very unhelpful doctor!!! Daisy 1925

that's what gets me because I have done my research and found a lot people lot weight thought walking eating less like you said. they had great results it most natural thing we can do. thank you that's given me encouragement. I should build it up to the 5k then

I always thought walking was a good way of losing weight, especially if your able to pick up pace a little. x

that's right but what other are saying that you have to reduce how much you eat and do more walking and it helps

I'm recovering from a hip replacement but before I used to do a 20/30 mins walk a day and that's what I aiming to go back to I did find the only real way to lose weight was to calorie count I've lost almost 2 stone without any exercise If you calorie count and walk I guarantee you will lose weight Walking is lovely

Are you on the weight loss forum ? It has helped me so much and the people are lovely on it

Wishing you all the best enjoy your walks 👍🏻

Jogging or Brisk walking at least for 60-80 minutes/ x7days of week, with calories controlling reduces weight, not alone walking.

Bro. This is too heavy exercise for someone having 17 stone weight. Low carb and hypocalorie ( reduced by 30% ) diet will help. Exercise to the capacity. Heavy people may have orthopedic problems is do intense walking.

I do Nordic walking , I am very over weight enjoy walking a lot and swimming , I cannot go to the gym as I have a condition called thrombocytopenia which means I have very low clotting platelets and bruise and bleed . Anyway the Nordic walking is done with 2 poles which together work the upper body too . I have lost a stone in weight and lost inches too, I do it as part of a group now and it is a lovely social thing as well,

I was looking into nordic it looks reelly good

That is terrific, ellaco! I am very overweight too, but haven't found a local walking group that caters for people like us! This virtual walking group does, however, really support and motivate me to get out and walk. Well done for being proactive!

I think you are better moving than not moving. Walking really helps me and apart from anything after a walk I feel good and don't want to eat! Just try for 20 mins every day and build up to 30 . You can do it in 10 min slots if you cant make it all at once.

I have read lots of research that say that walking is very underrated as a form of exercise. I can't see how moving doesn't help with losing weight and toning. But i am not a Doctor.

If you enjoy walking I would carry on.

Hi natty. I too have agreat deal of weight to lose. I started at just over 16 st. I should be about 10. I dont know how old you are, but as I am nearly60 I find walking by far the best exercise. And of course it helps with the weight loss. I have lost bout 14 lbs in4 weeks. I know its mostly water but the walking absolutely helps.

My doctor (in Germany) recommended walking to kick off my weight loss. Just 20 mins 3x a week (which really pissed me off because I was doing more than that already). But I took his warnings to heart and started increasing my walking time. I walked for 20 mins, later 40 mins, 3x a day, increasing to pretty much every day, in the morning. Then I started walking to a station further down the line in the evening after work. Also about 40 mins. Of course, I also tried to eat more healthily and that helped aswell. Fast forward 2 1/2 years later and I have lost 40 lbs, and have been maintaining for about 1 1/2 years. My walking turned into running (although I still walk a lot) and I am a lot fitter than I was when my doctor made his recommendation. So, yes, walking is great for weight loss! Just go ahead and do it!

Hi walking is good for you as someone else said do it in small bursts at first and slowly up it to 20-30 or longer if you know you can do it, I go to an healthy eating group and he recommends walking.

If you power walk you will burn calories. Walking is good for your heart rate and any excercise combined with a calorie controlled diet will help you loose weight. If yo go for a walk at a time when you would be usually sat infront of the tv eating a biscuit or few ofcourse that walk instead of the biscuit will help yo loose weight.. your GP is a general practitioner... they generalise everything in practice to take it with a pinch of salt... keep moving and eventually you will find tht you are eating less any way. Well done for walking at 17 stones... it is exhausting. When I was 17 stones 10lb goodness me I sweated so much walking and yes I lost weight as you sweat... Drs dont know it all you know your body the best so enjoy and never give up giving up
