Hello,

I hope you all can help here. I went to my GP yesterday as I'm been trying to get pregnant. I have hashimotos with underactive thyroid. My hormone blood results have all came back to normal except ShGB. This is lower. The dr said this could indicate PCOS. I have a monthly regular period every month, sometimes it's early or late by 2 to 3 days but my hair is falling out like crazy. We had to blocked Hoover's and my hair is everywhere to the point it's annoying. Think will be bald soon. Can anyone help? Do you think I have PCOS? I do get hair all over my face but I have had laser treatment so don't have much. Just bit worried now in what the go said 'it could be pcos due to low sex hormone globin binding. Surely other results wound not be normal then if i did have it? Hope you lovely people can advise me x

Sex hormone binding globulin is a marker for insulin resistance. Did your GP measure LH and FSH? Have you have an ovary ultrasound?

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease. Presumably you are on thyroxine?

I think your GP needs to refer you to an endocrinologist for further tests

Hello thank you fornyour reply DR.

yes LH is in normal range and FSH is in normal range. I am on levothyroxine and is levelled for over 3 years now. All other hormone is normal range except for the SHBG at 28*.

I went to see a endocrologist yesterday and he is the one that's recommended Metformin. I haven't started taking it yet. I'll be honest I am bit scared to. I haven't had a scan to prove I have PCOS so not sure if metformin will benefit me as I'm not diagnose. Did have a miscarriage 3 years ago though.

I'm not a medical doctor. I can't ethically advise you. Although nor can any of the other people on here. You need to get a proper diagnosis. It us infuriating that endocrinology is so far behind the science with this.

PCOS and thyroid problems coexist frequently. The hair loss could be due to either. The doctor who advised nedformin wuthout a proper diagnosis is lazy and incompetent.

A miscarriage is sadly not evidence of anything. They are a common occurence unfortunately.

I urge you to speak to your doctor about a proper diagnosis and have your thyroid problem properly evaluated. There is a possible evidence based intervention that you could try and I can share the the research with you if you want so you can discuss it with your endocrinologist.
