Scared I cant have a baby

Hello everyone myself and my husband have been trying for a baby for 4 years. I have pcos and I dont ovulate. . I have had my tubes unblocked, ovarian drilling, clomid and metformin. Nothing seems to work yet doctors tell me im not infertile. I dont get regular cycles. I am beginning to lose hope and I am so down because my husband and I just want to start a family. If anyone has any success stories or advice please help. X

I've been there with all the the same treatments, in the end we decided to stop as it was taking over our life. After some time away from it all we decided on adoption. We adopted our little girl at 3 months and shes now a boisterous two year old. So probably not a success story from your point of view but we feel like the luckiest people alive!

You dont say how old you are, age played a part in our decision.

I was 37 when we decided to stop, my sister had a baby though and she has pcos. She tried lots of natural supplements alongside the drugs, i remember her taking vitamin d, inositol powder and magnesium.

Hi, I was diagnosed with pcos over 10 years ago, I already had a child and wanted to have another one but I never had regular periods, I remember that I went years without ever having a period. Obviously as I already had a child I was not offered any form of treatment or medication and I really lost hope that I would ever be able to have another child and it may seem selfish to say it as I already had a child but I was truly upset and heartbroken. Fast forward to the present day and I have been blessed with two more. I never took any medication but what helped me was losing a percentage of the excess weight that i was carrying as I was overweight and following a healthier diet which kickstarted my periods again. I know this probably is not helpful to you as it wasn’t a specific treatment/medication etc but I just wanted to share my story as proof that miracles can happen, please don’t give up hope xx

Thank you so much for sharing your amazing story. Im glad it happened for you again. To be honest since being diagnosed with pcos my weight increased drastically so I am starting a low gi diet tomorrow can you recommend any tips to help lose the weight as I've heard its harder when you have pcos. Thank you so much xxx

Look at 'the answer to pcos' website - it is a diet I did 10 years ago and I have kept the weight off pretty much (I wasn't TTC) but two verity ladies did it at the same time as me and both lost 7 stone in a year and conceived naturally. Over 1000 babies have been born for pcos ladies following the diet so Norah really knows her stuff.

It’s said that it may be harder to lose weight with pcos due to the levels of leptin in our bodies it’s harder for our bodies to recognise when we are full.

Try and increase quality protein in your diet. Protein can improve satiety and have a regulating effect on blood sugar levels. Good sources of protein include: fish and seafood, turkey and chicken, soya, tofu, legumes and lentils if vegetarian.

Increase vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

Increase good fats (avocados, coconut oil, olive oil)

Consume plenty of water (8 glasses per day)

Limit foods high in sugar (e.g. cakes, pastries, soft drinks) and processed foods

Limit high fructose foods as these have been shown to increase leptin levels.

Keep active, try to aim for at least 30 mins a day, you could even check out the NHS couch 2 5k plan.

Keep a food diary/ an app like My fitness pal/nutracheck to log your calories.

If you want to kickstart the weight loss you could also google Michael Moseleys 8 week Blood Sugar Diet which is technically a low calorie diet plan, again always consult with your doctor or health professional beforehand to discuss the suitability of any plan to your circumstances.

Above all, try not to stress too much and aim to get at least 8 hours sleep a night if possible.

The initial stages of any weight loss can be depressing and you may feel like giving up or feel like it’s never going to happen, we have all been there and done that or we have had our binge days (or two!) and end up hating ourselves.. well I know I have anyway.. the point is that you are trying, it didn’t take one day or 1 week for you to gain that weight so give yourself the time to lose it, be patient and be kind to yourself.

Think about what you want to achieve. When you think about this try not to just say ‘I want to lose two stone’ or ‘to be healthier’. Try to think of particular things you will be able to do or clothes you will wear or how you will feel knowing you have lost a lot of weight. Think things like ‘Losing just 10% of my body weight can bring my periods back to normal, it can reduce my risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other PCOS complications”. Imagine yourself and how good it will feel to have lost the weight... you can do it!!! Good luck xx

I hope you find something that works for you soon. Did the drs say if you ovulated on the clomid or not? There is another tablet that you can try but I can’t remember what it’s called at the moment. I’ll have to check.

I’ve heard good things about inositol and I am looking into trying it myself.

There are some good books on amazon to help with a PCOS diet but I also found some nice recipes on the diabetes uk website as they’re low gi a lot of the time too. X

Hello Binky1983.

I went for a blood test after every cycle of clomid and there was no improvement unfortunately, I had such high expectations as I heard they were very good. I take inositol but I think my main issue is my weight. Im going to try the low gi diet and exercise 3 days a week and hopefully this will make a difference. If you could find out about the other tablet that would be great I will try everything before going for ivf. Thank you for your kind words and support. X

I believe it is letrozole that is another tablet to try. I’m sure someone on this board will have tried it. I’m on clomid at the moment so don’t have experience of it unfortunately. There is also tamoxifen. Do you have regular cycles on your own as this makes a difference for some of the drugs I think. This link may help too hfea.gov.uk/treatments/expl...

If you go on Facebook there’s a trainer on there called drew baird fitness, who specialises in PCOS. He has some good weight loss tips. He recommends HIIT workouts and yoga / Pilates as the best way for PCOS weight loss. X

Remember also that we ovulate later than the norm so you may well be ovulating some times but blood tests are being done at the wrong time. Look at the fertilityfriends website as it advises about charting your temperature and is the only accurate way for pcos ladies.

Also dont focus on your period, I had relatively regular periods but rarely ovulated, some ladies conceive without a period so really periods dont mean a whole lot as you can ovulate without one and having one doesnt mean you ovulate either.

I conceived Noah when I was 36 via IUI who is now 12, it took 3 years and was hell - can you not move to IUI/IVF - I presume your partners sperm is good ?

My husbands sperm count was tested and it was good. I have a thermometer and I printed a chart which I will start again but when I previously did this there was no change.

I have PCOS and endometriosis and 3 children :)

My oldest was born after 4 years of trying and eventually conceived on Clomid. With my 2nd and 3rd I lost 3 stone and fell pregnant within 3 months with both. I couldn't believe it, nor could the doctors. While I know I've been extremely lucky, I do believe the weight loss, no smoking, exercise etc really helped with no.2 and no.3.

Never give up hope, but with the stress you're putting yourself under that won't help. I wish you all the best in the future x

Do you ever take provera to give you a bleed? If you weren’t having regular cycles then like hols said they may have been doing your blood tests on the wrong day.

Thanks. Clomid works for me and I have managed to get pregnant twice on it but it wasn’t meant to be on those times. Fingers crossed for next time!
