Hi everyone,

I found out this morning after having an ultrasound scan last week (for something completely different) that i have PCOS on my right ovary so i'm now waiting to be referred to a gynecologist by my doctor to do some more tests and start treatment.

I have looked up on google what it is exactly and the treatment for the symptoms but thought it would be better to ask people who have and are dealing with PCOS.

If anyone can give me any advice or anything that is just helpful to know or look into i would really appreciate it.

Thanks, Nikki

Hello! You can't have PCOS 'on one ovary' is that what the doctors said? PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal condition but Polycystic Ovaries (PO) can be limited to just one ovary I guess. Polycystic means 'many cysts'. PCOS is a syndrome with many symptoms, one of which is polycystic ovaries.

So if during your scan the doctor saw many cysts on one ovary and then took into account other symptoms of yours, they might have suggested you have PCOS.

Common PCOS symptoms are being overweight and an inability to loose the weight, facial hair, thinning scalp hair, excessive body hair, acne, infertility, abnormal menstrual cycle. These symptoms are because you have a hormonal imbalance.

There is no hard and fast rule to a) what your hormones should be and b) what PCOS hormones are doing. The way I understand it is that the mechanism for 'firing' your hormones is unpredictable and so I have too much testosterone (and am really hairy), not enough oestrogen (I don't have periods), cannot loose weight easily (insulin resistence connected to testosterone) and not enough iron (thinning scalp hair) - but that can all change in an instant and I find that my iron levels have come up and my testosterone down etc.

Do you identify with any other symptoms?

Hi,

When she told me it was just Polycystic Ovary but on my blood test form it has ?PCOS.

I have all the symptoms you've mentioned. I had a blood test done last month to check my progesterone and estrogen levels as i believed i had a hormonal imbalance but they were in range. my doctor thinks i have high testosterone levels so i have a blood form to check it along with my Prolactin and female androgens listed as (FAI/SHBG/Testosterone) (TF)

My doctor said it wasn't serious though as i'm still having my periods although they can be irregular and change between light and heavy and last 2-5 days.

I'm just waiting for my referral to the gynecologist now to do some further testing.
