🌱Greggs vegan sausage roll🌱

So there has been a bit of a twitter uproar over the new Greggs sausage roll. Reading some of the tweets and Greggs responses, I think they have handled the situation well by responding with humour.

I make my sausage rolls with jus roll puff pastry and Linda McCartney sausages for an occasional treat as I think they are the best combination. Especially with harrisa, mustard or a spicy sauce.

I have never been to Greggs so maybe if anyone does go to Greggs and tries the Vegan sausage rolls maybe they could report back. Apparently they are selling out fast!

I am tempted to Gregg it when next I pass. Just for the experience.

I had the vegan bean wrap in greggs just before Christmas, it was nice but probably not amazingly healthy.

Sounds like I should try the sausage roll :)

Yes maybe give it a go. Apparently it was motivated by a petition by PETA last year, which was signed by more than 20,000 people asking Greggs for a vegan alternative. It’s only £1 and made of quorn apparently. Probably quite nice. Ali🌱

I have to say this does look very appealing, my boss was showing me a picture of it the other day and I would love to try it on your behalf Ali 😊 but sadly its not Gluten Free, but it is really pleasing that they are starting to cater for Vegans

Same issue for me. My gluten allergy is the only 'hard' thing about my vegan diet.

Yes I can imagine. To be honest the nicest sausages rolls I’ve had have been when I make them myself. It must be tricky not having the convenience of just buying something off the shelf and I totally understand that. Ali

Agreed, its a real nightmare at times, needing Gluten Free and Vegan, especially eating out, is a real challenge

That’s true. They could have made them vegan and gf couldn’t they. So hard I can imagine having to avoid gluten, not easy especially if you are out and want something quickly ☹️

It is improving slightly, trouble is its always something really Sweet 🙄

We tried the Linda McCartney Sausage Rolls new years eve. They're not bad at all.

Rarely pass a Greggs but it has been certainly talked about on almost every radio station. Great bit of advertising for Greggs! 👍😁

I’ve not had the sausage rolls just the sausages. Glad you thought they were ok. I know. Not sure why there has been such a response to Greggs doing vegan sausage rolls! People need to get used to vegan products appearing on the shelves 🌱👍😁

I tried to get one yesterday. They reported the demand is so high that next supplies will only come in on 8th Feb.

Really? I suppose that’s good in a way 🙂

Today I had on, from the service area on the M1 motorway. Very salty otherwise what one might expect. Job done.

Lol well done Andy. A burger and a sausage roll this week or for experimental research.... You’re a star! Ali 🌱🙂

Just tried one too (apparently the shortage problems have been solved).

The pastry was surprisingly nice, but I struggled to eat the filling. It kind of looked like meat, which made me paranoid that they'd given me a meat one by mistake. And it tasted like - well, i've not eaten meat for decades so I'm not sure I can remember what it tastes like, but this did not taste like any vegetable based food i've even eaten. Its also left a horrible, cloying feeling around my mouth.

I think they tried to produce a vegan sausage that tasted like a meat one - and I guess they succeeded.

Oh Ben, that’s awful. I don’t think I’m going to be trying one. Thank you for reporting back! I noticed when I was in sainsburys they had vegan burgers and mince that looked like cheap meat. I wouldn’t want to eat it. When I was in the airport recently I ordered a drink and stuffed olives after eating one I knew something was wrong. Turned out they were stuffed with pork! 🤮

That's bizarre adding pork to olives. Hopefully as the number of vegans and vegetarians grows people in the food industry will become more aware and stop doing things like that.
