Fungal infection on Finger and Toenails?

I have developed what appears to be a fungal infection on my index and third finger of my left hand with the index nail lifting free from the underlying finger. Some of my toes also exhibit signs of a similar infection. I am wondering if it is a cause of the medication I am taking, i.e. Mycophenolate (2500mg daily) + 10mg Prednisolone or as a result of my immune system being suppressed by such medication. I will be raising this with my consultant on Friday and my GP tomorrow but any comments which suggest similar occurrences would be helpful.

I have had experience of softening of the nails on the foot (similar to ingrown toenails). I learnt, from the Internet that immunosuppressants can soften the nails and can therefore bend or they lift from the nail bed.

I'm not taking any immunosuppressants now and my nails are fine.

Hi there i had the same thing but mine was my index finger and my thumb nail on different hands, i got a perscription from my doctor and that cleared it up in about 6mths and now those 2 nails have become very strong but the rest are very brittle. Like Berkshirebird i found information on the internet. Good luck and hope they soon get better .....

Hi, I have had fungal toe nails for approx. 2 years have tried all sorts of things from the doctor. The only thing I haven't tried is tablets, as I take so many other tablets did not want to add any others. Patience seems to be the only thing and continue to use prescribed nail treatment. Some clear up and then return and others just won't heal. It is very annoying but actually the least of my problems. I use bright nail varnish in the summer, not so good for men or maybe you could start a new trend. Hope you can either find something or find ways to help cover it up.

Dear Albasain,

I don't get problems with my nails but I get fungal infections on my body. I haven't had any recently but they look like cigarette burns. I use 'Selsun' shampoo to clear it; contains selenium which is toxic to fungus- it's a bit toxic to us as well, by the way! there are a number of preparations for nail infections/fungus these days- no idea if there any good but worth trying perhaps. let me, us all, know how you get on and good luck!

Best wishes

I've also had problems with fungal nail infections. I think being immunosuppressed tends to leave you vulnerable to them.

There are various treatments available on prescription and through your chemist but I'd definitely check with your GP or consultant before trying any, just to be safe. Particularly important if you consider taking the tablets which if I remember correctly are pretty toxic and can cause liver problems.
