Anyone know of sinus crusting treatment?

Hi. My friend has GPA vasculitus and has a lot of crusting in his nose. He has appointments coming up but wondered if anyone if anyone can recommend and medications or herbal treatment?

ENT told me to use Neilmed sinus rinses. they make a variety of treatments, and i've tried 2:

the bottle rinsing set with little pkts you dilute) which works fantastic for me on all my various chronic nasal passage/sinus probs. & i also use the strongest tin spray can, which is ready-mixed so extra good for keeping, say, in the bathroom/bedroom. i now wonder how i survived without neilmed for nearly 60 years

but i did start OTC neilmed on ENT's advice....so maybe your friend should at least check with a gp before using it. also, before i started using neilmed, i read the customer reviews on amazon. these helped me understand how to use the bottle rinse set - this does take some getting used to. by the time i needed the spray tin during a bad cold, i was relaxed about the weirdness of this equpiment, and better able to cope while figuring out technique.

i was re-reading various neilmed instructions leaflets the other day, and noticed they recommend use for crusting. this is why i'm replying now (i have SLE & Sjogrens etc, and am being watched for vasculitis, but i'm not actually diagnosed with GPA...although i do have crusting amongst my chronic ENT symptoms). but, equally, i'm replying because i v quickly realised that ENT was totally right to recommend neilmed products...i'd spent a lifetime trying all sort of OTC pharmaceutical products + herbal etc products + various gp prescribed meds, and neilmed helps me cope on a day to day basis + during colds, better than anything ever before...+ i know it's approved by my consultants

I've had a lot of nasal crusting as the disease has affected my ENT badly. What works for me is a salt spray I used on a daily basis with regular blowing.

ENT advised me too use Neilmed, it was very good and if I remember correctly it's a salt wash. I found using the bottle very easy after the first couple of goes . Thankfully I don't need to use it now but I was advised to use it for at least 2/3 weeks at a time even if my symptoms had cleared.

I have WG with nasal crusting and use Neil Med with saline fluid sachets. I was told by ENT to use Sterimar Nasal Spray which is saline as well and you can buy in Boots for about £6. This worked to start with and is easy to use. Maybe try this to begin before seeing Consultant. Best wishes Sue

My husband has WG & the nasal crusting. He uses the Neilmed bottle but doesn't waste money on buying the sachets, he just makes up a saline solution, it's only salt & water.

His extra treatment, is when we were in France, he was prescribed an oil which is 'dropped' up his nose. This helps to soften the crusting but the oil was not available in the UK. He now uses the lightest olive oil that you can buy in the shop and this does the same job. This was suggested as an alternative by the doctor.

My ENT doctor recommended Neilmed , although many years ago my retired consultant advised cooled1 litre of boiled water with a teaspoon of salt, sugar and sodium bicarbonate. Old fashioned but it worked.

I put a little Vaseline on a cotton bud and coat my nasal passages before bedtime. It really softens the crusting.

I have WG/GPA, and use a Neilmed bottle, as advised by ENT. I make up a solution with table salt in boiled water, rather than buy the sachets. I also have tried Sterimar spray, but find the Neilmed bottle more effective. I was also told to use a little vaseline, but haven't found it necessary.

Hi 35 Merlin, I use a nasal flush similar to those mentioned above. My ENT consultant recommended any nasal flush. I opted for a 'netti pot'. There are many on the market. I use one measure of normal kitchen salt and fill it up with warm water. It is part of my daily routine now. ... morning and evening... and it has helped enormously. It is a strange feeling when first used, but you quickly get used to it. It also cleared my sinuses.

My ENT doctor subscribed STÉRIMAR hypertonic blocked nose spray (CU)...it helped me a lot and it is natural( mostly sea water)

today at my ENT appointment the nasel biopsy I had done shows signs of granular vasculitis so it is looking more likely that I have GPA. The consultant recommended salty nasel washes hope ths heps

Dear 35merlin,

I hate to suggest this- too obvious really but....Steam, no really! just breath in steam, for a few minutes, then blow your nose. Too simple? Then add a few drops of 'Olbas Oil' or, depending on your preference, any other 'aromatic' oil of your choice. During the night Olbas oil can also be sprinkled onto pillows/bedding or even, during the day, your handkerchief. You can buy various 'gadgets' that infuse, your home, with all manner of 'anti-clogging' 'medicaments'- the list, of such products, is absolutely endless. Do try the steam, sweet smelling if you wish, first though- by far the easiest, and cheapest option.
