My sugar levels are out of control...

My sugar levels are out of control. I just tested at 24 and all I had was fish and chips and veg. Normally that wouldn't even take me past 10. I have recently increased my gliclazide because I was averaging 12-13 over a 7 day period.

I am not long out of ICU and am still recovering. Could that be affecting my sugar levels and how I am processing food? I have been told it can take up to 2 years to recover from being critically ill.

I suffer from many health conditions and take 13 different drugs every day including morphine and I can barely walk due to a damaged pelvis. I do mobilise every day to keep going but not far enough to affect my blood sugar. I can only potter about.

Should I go back to see a diabetic nurse? Or see if it calms down? I am going to eat just chicken and salad for the rest of the day. See if that brings it down. But my nurse has told me to ear some carbs with every meal. I am just so confused. I live in the UK.

I found that some carbs raise my levels higher than others. Pasta is the worst. Then potatoes, bread and rice. For some reason, rice works for my system. I live in the US but have had glucose levels from above 440, UK equivalent to 24.4. My doctor says anything over 300 and I would feel ill. Anything over 400, I would feel really bad and should go to the hospital for an insulin drip. I got over 500 one time at home but never went. I just decided to go to bed and see what happened in the morning. I take lots of prescription medicines as well but they haven't changed recently. My numbers are much lower now, around 170-180 (9.4 to 10.0) and some as low as 119 (6.7) or 145 (8.1). Call your diabetic nurse if you are really worried about your levels or go to A&E.
