I just started insulin. My doctor put me on a sliding scale but told me to stop at 22 units of Lantus. After two months I'm at 35 and have pretty good control. Not great. FBG 94-137, but this morning was 104. I guess he'll figure that out in a few weeks when I go back. My friend is on Novolog and estimates her carbs per meal and takes 1 unit for 9 carbs.

Yes, I learned how to test and adjust ALL my insulin factors, BASAL, carb-ratio and correction factor. You BASAL need to be tested and adjusted FIRST! Only AFTER your BASAL is stable can you even begin to test and adjust you carb ration and CF.

I am on 9u Lantus 2x daily. MY carb ratio is 1 unit of Novalog (aka novarapid) per 15 grams of carbs. Correction factor Typical is 1 unit of rapid insulin brings my BG down 30 points. (US measures). My A1c usually runs high 5s to low 6s.
