Hello

I have a 10 year old who was diagonised with tics 3 years ago. Its physical tics which come and go . They do not cause him much distress and they are our part of life now.

A few weeks ago my son mentioned to me that he was hearing a voice. And this voice was telling him to do stuff, like check if the door is closed. Or check if his closet door is closed.

This stopped after a day. Then yesterday he came to me and said i should take away all his games consoles because hes hearing a voice telling him to log out of the games. We decided he stops plying games for now and we see how it goes.

The today he was making a smoothie using a blender and he stopped. He came to me so distressed and said he thinks we need to go see a doctor because the voice is telling him to put his hand in the blender and he is worried

I have booked an appointment for friday

Is this common with tourettes ?if so Any tips on how i can help my son.

Whilst OCD has been associated with Tourettes hearing voices seems to me to indicate something else. Here is a Tourettes website which you may find useful.

Tourette’s OCD can present differently than typical OCD and these sorts of unwanted and upsetting thoughts can occur. Some children have referred to these thoughts as hearing a voice in an effort to describe the thoughts as coming from somewhere else and being persistent and “not them.” CBT and other therapies can help. This article does a nice job describing some families experiences and what’s worked for them.

Thank you so much , after your post and reading your link, i spoke to my son and he explained thats its his own inner voice , everything he described was more like intrusive thoughts.

For now due to him being so young i explained to him as these are junk thoughts. We are working on copying mechanisisms . His doctor said its anxiety as hes recently changed schools

I hope things are settling down for your son. I am just curious, was he showing any signs of sickness around the time of the onset of these intrusive thoughts/voices? If so, I would recommend looking into PANDAS/PANS as this has a different treatment approach and interventions to treating tics or typical OCD as PANDAS/PANS is neuroimmune. It is possible to have both OCD and tics (they are often comorbid) but PANDAS/PANS (also known as BGE) can sometimes be the cause for some people, and can often go undiagnosed.

I only ask as my tics and various other symptoms have turned out to actually be caused by PANDAS/PANS and I went undiagnosed for 3 years, and the treatments I tried were ineffective as they weren't treating the PANDAS/PANS, as the condition is not well known enough.

Just something to consider, I wish you the best of luck.

Can I ask what treatment you used for Pandas? My son has ADHD and tics, we stopped stimulants because they exacerbated his tics. He also used to have repeated strep throat when he was younger and lymes disease.

It's really a case by case basis (based on the symptoms and whether there is an underlying infection). For many, the first line of treatment is antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. Treatment primarily focuses around treating any underlying infections, reducing brain inflammation and calming the immune system. I've added some links to resources that I found useful when I was starting this journey that may be helpful and provide more detailed information than I can on the condition as well, I hope this helps :) pandasnetwork.org/
