my 9 year old got ticks, 5 days ago star... - Tourettes Action
my 9 year old got ticks, 5 days ago start to develop a loud sound that is constant, is there any tips to make it less frequent?
Hi,
The best thing you can do is try to ignore it - difficult, I know. My son used to do a loud, high pitched squeak (like to noise of a training shoe on the sports hall floor). It started when he was seven and carried on throughout primary school. It was the one tic he hated more than any other as it drew attention to him. We were convinced that because he had made this tic 'taboo' it was the one that his TS did the most.
We explained to him that people only looked because it was a sudden, loud noise. They weren't looking at him, but that it was just a reflex action. I don't know that it helped and he seemed to grow out of that tic mostly by secondary school.
You should probably explain the tic to his teacher so that some of the pressure is off at school. If you ask, they should allow him some 'time out' to go and let the tics out in private if it makes him more comfortable.
best wishes.
The best way is to be relaxed over the whole situation and to ignore the tics if you can. Responding to the tics will make your kid more aware of them and then trying to stop them or make them less frequent will cause your kid to become stressed out which in turn makes the tics worse.
When i was diagnosed as a child i found that this was the best way to go about it. The more attention the tics get, the worse they get because the more you notice them and try to hold them back.
