What are your thoughts on RAI, thyrodectamy and potassium Iodide?

I had gone to the doctor when my son was 7 months with complaints of weight gain and hair loss and was told that I looked good on paper with my thyroid levels still within the normal range, except I was on the very low end.

In 2005, when my son was 18 months in August, I began having the classic hyperthyroid symtoms of insomnia, aching limbs, sensitivity to heat, shaking, talking super fast, and weakness in my hands to were I could not open bottles at all and I had no grip so things would fall out of my hands no matter how hard I tried to hold on.

I was a little overweight and I decided this was a blessing. So I didn’t take the medication. November 2005, I was 60 lbs thinner. In December I decided to take the medication. By February 2006, I was off the meds.

I had to be taken off it because my thyroid was in the normal range now. It is about this time that I went to get a second opinion. They said I had been misdiagnosed and that the antibodies for hashimotto’s disease where showing that I had that disease instead.

A year later I became hypo. I started taking synthroid at very low doses. By the time my son was 3, I was taken off synthroid. I have had my thyroid levels checked every few months until now in 2019, in January when I became hyper again which I believe was due to a miscarriage at the end of November 2018. I started to feel muscle aches, I could go up the stairs or get into a car. It was with a lot of pain and difficulty.

They told me I need tapazole now. I decided to take propranolol for my heart instead because I was told I had hashimotto’s so I assumed that this would go away in a few months. Now in May 2019 I’m being told I have both, but the current antibodies that are elevated right now are Graves antibodies. They want me to remove my thyroid, or do Rai and definitely take the tapazole 15 mg/day. February 25th I had a blood test. My tsh was <0.0001 (low) and my t4 was 10.0 (high). I have had a goiter since 2005. I have a lot of nodules now, 2 big ones and lots of little ones. I’m going to get another blood test in a couple of days.

My heart rate with out meds is 160-180 bpm and With propranolol it’s 99 bpm.

I really don’t know what is the best option. I was told that a friend of my moms had his thyroid removed 50 yrs ago and he is still fine. I also found research on potassium iodide and Graves patients finding remission. Has anyone ever tried potassium iodide?

I got a thyroidectomy and I highly recommend it. Just be prepared for weight gain and make sure you stay active afterwards.

Keep in mind too that grave's causes high levels which put strain on your heart best bet is to get rid of it for a better quality of life in my opinion.
