Hello Everyone,

I'm new to HealthUnlocked and just wanted to say Hello :)

Over the past month I've been prodded like a pin cushion and finally been diagnosed with Graves Disease so I'm just getting used to all of the medication. I started Propranolol 40mg 3 weeks ago and then Carbimazole 40mg last Thursday but I've come down with a sore throat and cold-like symptoms so just been for a blood test this morning. Waiting to see if everything is ok.

I never realised how much I ignored my symptoms before I was diagnosed, I was suffering constant heart palpitations, excessive sweating, irregular periods, irritability, trouble sleeping, etc and I put on over 1 stone initially and then lost over 2 (I'll confess, this made me really happy). It just makes me wonder that if I hadn't stopped the contraceptive pill last year then I may not have thought anything was going on. It was the irregular periods that made me realise something was up, and now here I am.

I'm a bit unsure of the other treatment options, the Radioiodine sounds a bit scary and having a thyroidectomy seems a bit extreme. I haven't explored these options in any great detail though.

Please feel free to introduce yourself and tell me your experiences, it would be nice to hear from you :)

Thanks,

Ashley x

Hi Ashley,

I am 44 got graves ten years ago go put on Propranolol then two years later got hypothyroidism, was put on thyroxin will be on it now for the rest of my life.

I went and seen a naturopath for something else and I told her I was on thyroxin and i told your my story. She had said to me wish I had gone to her for my thyroid disease as she would of be able to help me before I had any treatment. As this disease is like a roller coaster up and down all the time. I have seen changed Doctors and they say going gluten free is very help full as well. If I could turn back time I would go natural therapy first and try and google to see if there is a support page on face book for Gluten free I know this options cost many but if you can afford it this way you are better off. Good luck with everything.
