overactive thyroid

My 17 year old grandson was diagnosed with overactive thyroid last year after his eyes bulged and he was having a number of problems including falling behind at school. We noticed that his eye colour has also changed, is this common? He has seen a specialist and is now on medication, I have been told that overactive thyroid is harder to treat than an underactive one.

I also had overactive thyroid /Graves' disease and the worst part of it for me at the time was the bulging eyes; I was in middle school and teased constantly.... The only thing that helped me was an ends doctor who suggested 3 weeks of a very high dose of steroids. I blew up with water weight gain while on the steroids but this treatment significantly decreased my bulging eyes problem... Hope this helps. Best of luck
