Hair loss still continuing - getting upset

Despite being on T3 for some 8 months I'm still moulting. I've taken an iron supplement (Floradix) for around 30 years and my last ferritin test showed that it was OK.

Any ideas what I can do please?

Thanks!

If you get any answers Id really like to know.

Im on T3, longer than you but my hair is still falling out also.

Wish I could tell you something positive.

Were your bloods ok?

Perhaps its down to raising the dose? I dont know.

I try and raise mine but I feel worse than ever!

Good luck, I hope you get the answer. x

Oh dear, I hated this too. Mine only came back after my t4 was raised so my TSH is always under 1, but it continues to fall out too, so I can only imagine it grows faster than it falls out. Every so often I find little clumps of new hair, shorter than the old hair, and I guess it must go through spurts of growth. Recently I noticed even the area just above the temples, which has always been quite sparse, is really filling out with new clumps of short hair.

Just another thought. I remember over the years - before being dx ht - noticing my hair falling out in the spring.

Relieved to know that I am not the only person whose hair falls out on T3. I probably lost 50% of mine, which was awful, but endos claimed to know nothing about this as a side effect and were unable to help.

I gave up pn T3 eventually for a number of reasons, but one was that as soon as I raised the dose beyond 30 mcg and started to feel good, I suffered more hair loss.

How is your hair now? Is it improving on whatever you're taking? You must have been disappointed with Endo's answer though.

Much better now thank you on a cocktail of supplements including selenium and a serious B complex. Still not perfect, but I finally feel I am getting there.

Thats great news!

Did you find that you were deficient in VitB or any other vitamins? Also, you stopped the T3 completely as well? Did the hair get worse when you stopped it?

Thanks!

At the beginning of my journey I was deficient in pretty much everything you can be deficient in! I was taken off T3 by an endo who didn't know what he was doing and was then un-medicated for nine months, during which time everything got worse. Five years into treatment next month and everything is pretty much how it should be again.

I believe low B12 can lead to hair loss.

in reply to mstp

Thanks but B12 level was extremely high and way over reference range.

Dr S advised me that all hypothyroid patients should take B12 supplements (maybe you need folic acid too). As for hair loss, well too much T3 can cause this but have you tried high dose Evening Primrose? It will take about 3 months to notice a difference. I believe Mary Shomon uses this supplement herself and I've looked up an article written by her on hairloss.

Thanks and see my comment above. Am wondering whether iron needs to be increased although ferritin level was adequate.

Also saw horsetail herb mentioned, it can be taken in tablet form. Will check out your link.
