second primary cancer after thyroid cancer

I had ca thyroid in 1980, and cancer of the kidney last year. I have recently found a paper stating that there is a 30% increased risk for a second primary cancer after thyroid cancer ie. a second brand new cancer. Has anybody heard of this?

The number of papers that I at least see abstracts for is large - so I might have seen that paper, or another that seems to suggest something similar. Luckily I have had no reason to do more than glance at thyroid cancer issues - and so am rather ignorant of the issues. Hence I have not got any more of an answer than this.

It must have been a very difficult journey for you - thanks for posting.

Hi Roslin sorry to hear this news...I have heard that there is an increased chance of the primary cancer returning...not that we are ever in full remission....also that RAI can increase your changes of getting bladder cancer etc... not sure about kidney cancer though...will check...wishing you well and hoping that you are being taken good care of...with best wishes xxx

Thank you for your reply, I will look into it. I did have RAI after the thyroidectomy. I wish at the time I had been given more information.

Hello Roslin,

I've heard of this news too and if you Google the 30% increased risk you will find quite a lot of other articles.

Last year I found out for myself, as I was diagnosed with CML, a form of Leukemia.

That was almost 7 years after my thyroid cancer diagnosis, and 5 years after treatment was done . I had RAI three times and was PET scanned and no traces of tumour found, but still have a raised TG. I had just passed the 5 years mark, so was pretty confident I had kicked the thyroid cancer. Now I'm in a new battle, with this leukemia, Not what I had expected at all!

Hope your cancer of the kidney is under control, as this leukemia will probably stay with me for the rest of my life.

Cheers,

Hannah

Hi Hanna, I am very sorry to hear about your CML. I do have an idea about how it feels to get news of a second primary cancer. It is unbelievable unfair. Bad luck???

I really hope your CML can be brought under control as soon as possible and you can feel well
