Has anyone else seen this? Treating resistant ht with T3/T4 combination.

And here I was literally about to write a blog asking if you have to test low in T3 to benefit from taking it. This came from the fb group 'Coalition for Better Thyroid Care'. Hope it is helpful to someone else.

That's a good link but the British Thyroid Foundation and the Royal College of Physicians probably wont agree. They appear to ignore Research altogether.

I, myself, asked my Endo if I could try T3 instead of the levo as I was feeling so bad and she agreed to 10mcg of T3 to 50mcg T4. It made an enormous difference to my wellbeing. I have since moved onto T3 alone and NDT.

shaws, how much NDT and T3 do you take? I am doing well on T3 however I was thinking whether I ought to add a little NDT for whatever potential benefits of NDT? I'll ask Dr M tomorrow what she thinks.

My reply wasn't very good. I meant I moved onto T3 alone for a while and then 10mcg T3 and 1 1/2 gr NDT at present.

thank you :)

Thanks for the pointer - just picking out a few interesting bits.....

(In the USA) the target TSH range is 0.5-2.0 mU/L. "2 may even be too high".

"a relatively common polymorphism of the deiodinase 2 gene known as Thr92Ala... may subtly impair T4 to T3 conversion in the brain... (a) study showed a prevalence of Thr92Ala homozygosity of 16%.... psychological well being in patients with the deiodinase 2 polymorphism improved significantly more on combination therapy than with LT4 alone".

- no commercial test for this 'tho.

(I paraphrased the original a bit)

What a well written and interesting article. I couldn't print it off straight from the web so I have copied and pasted on to a word doc and will be taking it to my endo on my next visit.

The article is saying EXACTLY what my endo is saying - "lets rule out everything first before we start looking at the thyroid meds (an absolute shed load of tests were ordered with more to come) and then go from there.

I was also very interested to read that the effects of fillers was also mentioned as this is what I have been telling my GP and now my endo but they dont seem to be hearing me.

I wouldn't normally print something off and ask an endo to read it but I think this article was so balanced that I will have a go.

Thanks for sharing this link.

Thank you for sharing the link.

This is a very good article but unfortunately at the end it brings up the bone and heart issues with over treatment. Exactly the theory I'm fighting over with my Endo :(
