Can I get a repeat prescription from a private doctor?

Hi. I have been hypothyroid for 9 years and on 125microgrammes thyroxine. I have been under a few different doctors none of whom would prescribe me armour thyroid despite the fact that my thyroid function has consistently fluctuated (at one time my Dr had me taking 125 one day and 150 the next!).

Does anyone know wether a private Dr could give me a repeat prescription for natural thyroid or if I would have to pay each time?

Are you wanting to try Armour because you are still suffering with symptoms? If you did have private prescriptions from a private doctor then it would be costly as some of the members here will verify.

If you are able to tolerate levothyroxine then it would be better to explore whether you are taking the correct dose, whether you are being given different brands, if other things are affecting your absorbtion and things like that.

So the answer to your question is yes, you can get repeat prescriptions for Armour but it would cost you around £25 to £30 per month.

I used to get Armour on private prescription from a private doc. I had to pay for it each time as well as his initial and follow up consultation fees. I could be wrong but I don't think a doctor, private or otherwise, can issue infinite repeat prescriptions without seeing a patient regularly so the cost of consultations has to be factored in too.

Have you tried asking to try some T3 along with your thyroxine? It can work really well for some patients and, unlike Armour, it is on the official list of prescribable medications.

Thanks for the replies to my question.

I have never really stopped having symptoms since I was diagnosed. Within 2 years I was on the dosage I am on now and over time it has just been adjusted back and forth between 125-150. I have had periods where it hasn't been too bad but most of the time I have some symptoms to some degree or other.

I have decided to have a comprehensive blood test done privately and use that to decide what to do with regards to medication and supplementation. Depending on the results I may follow the girls (hope you don't mind me calling you that!) suggestion of T3 supplementation or trying different brands.

Thanks.
