What to ask an Endo on 2nd visiting for Hyperthyroidism

I was diagnosed on first visit and numbers and test results didn't mean anything then. Advice on what to ask would be great! On 30 Carbimazole.

Looking back at your posts, you say you have Graves - an overactive thyroid (HyperThyroid). Sorry you've not had a reply but most of us are HypoThyroid (underactive).

You say you've been diagnosed - so what did the Endo say? What are your blood test results and have you had any treatment? you are entitled to see your test results (and all your records too If you want).

What's your prognosis? that is, what do they think will happen, advice and treatment? or are they waiting to confirm things by another blood test?

Just to give you an idea, (I'm just going by what others have said as I am not Hyper myself) the usual treatment is carbimazole (an antithyroid medication) to block over-production of Thyroid hormone then perhaps replace it with Levothyroxine (T4) - i.e. 'block and replace' therapy. Which can help for a while, but eventually if things don't calm down, then you are faced with a choice: Surgery or RAI.

There's a much better explanation on the main TUK site here....

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...

My only experience was a period of HyperT - horrid! (caused by a dodgy nodule) then, after I had a partial Thyroidectomy, HypoT. (a common version of HypoT is Hashimotos- autoimmune, Graves is also autoimmune).

I'm sorry I have no actual suggestions for questions - just "what is going on?!"

Best wishes Jane :D

Hi

Please can you post some more information - symptoms, meds, how long you have been unwell, your latest thyroid test results.

I have added 'Hyperthyroidism' to your question to clarify, this may help you to get a better response.

I don't have the results she just talked through numbers which meant nothing. I had a blood test through dr 2 weeks ago and a scan last week. I am over active. Had hot flushes mood swings shaking and anxiety and lost 21 lbs in two months despite being hungry and eating like a pig! I think my dr was very good to rest for thyroid as only been unwell for few months. They told me carbimazol for a month then re test hope to sort with drugs for 12 months and only consider surgery after that. I have two children under 3 and work part time in a busy office so they said no to any radiotherapy. Sorry bit new to all this does this explanation help

I have Graves too and was put on 30mg of carbimazole. Everyone is different so the endo will check whether the drugs are working and will lower the dose if necessary. Just listen carefully to your body and if you feel any changes have a chat with your GP. It's a bit suck it and see for the first few months. If you have your regular blood tests that should pick up nay changes quickly. Good luck!
