Question is if levels are ok can I start reducing medicating and for how long. Thank you for your support .

Hi, my name is Hadi from Kuwait, I was diagnosed with overactive thyroid function .I started carbimazol 20mg daily no improvement for 19 days after that I feel fine , have not done T4 ,T3 tests

Hadi, you should not reduce your medication without getting your thyroid hormone levels re-tested and then discussing things with your medical professional.

Hi,Usually treatment for thyroid disease is for life. As said the bloods all of them , are the key. I doubt any doctor will treat you if you do not need it. The reverse is usually true.!

Jackie, don't forget that hyperthyroid patients can sometimes go into remission, but even if they don't, it's not typical to stay on antithyroid medications for life.

Hadi, when you next see your doctor, he/she should discuss the proposed course of treatment with you, which will take into account how the current dose of carbimazole is working.

It is NOT a case of "usually". The British National Formulary says this:

Carbimazole is given in a dose of 15 to 40 mg daily; higher doses should be prescribed under specialist supervision only. This dose is continued until the patient becomes euthyroid, usually after 4 to 8 weeks and the dose is then gradually reduced to a maintenance dose of 5 to 15 mg. Therapy is usually given for 12 to 18 months.

18 months is also quoted in the SPC for Carbimazole.

Most Graves patients end up with one of three outcomes - remission, removal (total or partial) or RAI.

After removal or RAI they commonly require thyroid hormone replacement. But they do not stay of carbimazole for life.
