Hi, Perhaps if you can tell us a little more about this drug, we can try to help.

Have you or one of your family had this medicine prescribed to you for something?

Do you know what health condition the drug is supposed to treat?

Carbimazole? For hyperthyroidism. When the whole body seems to speed up?

You do not say that you are actually taking carbimazole but if you are then the side effects are in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) included by law with the drugs.

Some people develop side effects within 3/4 weeks of starting it. A skin rash affects 2% of patients, very itchy and covers whole of body, looks as if you have been stung by a nettle, it is called urticaria. Stop the carbimazole, and tell doctor. The rash disappears in a few days, the itch is helped by antihistamine tablets.

Most serious side effect is lowered white blood cells (agranulocytosis) resultls in a very sore throat with mouth ulcers and a high fever. Low white cell count makes you vulnerable to bacterial infetion Agranulocytosis is a medical emergency, must tell docotor immediately and insist on an appointment that day. You will need to take antibiotics and might even go to hospital for short time. Other side effects include sore joints, slight hair loss and headache.

If you react badly to carbimazole then you can be given propylthiouracil.

Hope this is useful.

In his place I doubt I would be waiting for a scan at an unnamed date when a call to the doctor could be made now.

Here is a link to a medical site. Scroll down to Severe side effects. to aid your decision for there is an alternative drug available after all.

I had a family member who took this drug along with a beta blocker for a two-year period. His hyperthyroidism gave him terrible headaches and of course, very hot all the time. I believe it's a safe alternative to being ill. I was given propylthiouracil when I was in my twenties and had no problem with that. Could his selenium be tested for deficiency?
