Selenium supplements for hypothyroid

Does anyone take selenium supplements for hypothyroidism? I read that they help-just wondered if anybody has supplemented their thyroxine with this or if we are ok if test results are fine.

Selenium is one of the minerals which assist T4 conversion to T3. I read that over 400mcg daily is liable to be toxic so I now take 200mcg daily. In answering this I am not clear which test results you mean -for selenium, or for thyroid.

I have just posted a blog with link to interesting Mary Shomon/Dr Ray Peat conversations, including some ways in which us hypothyroidians can help ourselves, here is the link in case you miss the blog.

Thanks very much for that-I meant the blood results for thyroid, mine are in the middle of the acceptable range, so all ok for thyroid. I will check out the link.

I eat 3 Brazil nuts at breakfast time as I read on this site that they are high in Selnium and magnesium and as it's a natural way to get what is needed I thought it best for me. Also as I take a load of additional supplements it suits me.

I read about Brazil nuts too, but they are only rich in Selenium if they have been grown in Selenium rich soil apparently so I supplement with 200mcgs daily also.

Thank you very much for the warning on taking too much. Been tempted to try some Selenium and see if it doesn't help some.

A friend in France, suffering from hypothyroidism, was advised by the local chemist to supplement with selenium and zinc every other day.

I have been taking Selenium now for 2 weeks and feel better already. I have heard that it sometimes restores natural hair colour in older people. I'm still holding my breath on this one.x

Thanks!-do you take it as well as levothyroxine?

Yes, I take T4 and T3, Selenium, Q10, Vit D and am about to start B12. It gets expensive but seems to help. x

In case of any unfortunate misunderstandings -yes, iI take it as well as levothyroxine. Selenium will not act in the place of levothyroxine, but it helps the levothyroxine (T4) to be converted to T3, which is the form usable by the tissues.
