Thyroid Patients and Flu Shots

Mary Shomon has a good article on thyroid patients and flu shots. This year the flu has been bad here in the US and there is a lot of pressure for getting your flu shot. There are some thoughtful comments by some doctors you will recognize. It is always up to the individual to make decisions about their own situation. PR

And what about other vaccines for holiday travel - are we at risk if we have those?

I think you have to add to that, "Are you at risk of the diseases that you might be exposed to on holidays in places that need vaccinations?" :-)

Stay at home. You know it makes sense!

I used to have the flu jab every year until I realised that I was really ill after having it!! It seems that whilst my body was making antibodies to the dead virus I was left open to any other viruses around. I haven't had the jab for the last 5 years and have been fine!!

I have never had a 'flu jab and get asked each time and I say 'no thanks'

Dr Mercola has also said that if you have a 'flu shot that if you do get flu, it only shortens the infection by about 1 1/2 days. This is some advice

The Cochrane reviews (which gather all the scientific studies together for meta analysis) says flu shots do not prevent complications of flu - in other words they don't prevent deaths from flu - and have a small but real risk of having a serious complication.

"Vaccination had a modest effect on time off work and had no effect on hospital admissions or complication rates. Inactivated vaccines caused local harms and an estimated 1.6 additional cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome per million vaccinations."

To say that the vaccines don't cause side effects is to ignore the complications caused by stimulating the immune system, of which Guillain-Barré Syndrome is the worse. Are they just playing with words here - complications are not side effects?
