TPO results, little help please.

Hi there, hoping someone can help me with TPO results. My results came back as over 4500, range 0-50. My Dr didn't seem too bothered about these results and told me the results were ok (note to self, always ask to see result). It was only when i went to see a different Dr in my practice that she pointed out they were very high and referred me to an endocrinologist. What's the health implication of having a high TPO? I understand its an antibody test and a high result would suggest hashimotos. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you x

Added bit: does it matter how high the results are or is it a case of once you're over the norm it just indicates there's a problem?

Hello,

Personally, I would take that result as meaning Hashimoto's and you should at least be monitored if nothing else. I had a positive antibody result much lower than yours and took it to my GP - she said she would have to look up Hashimoto's, which she did and agreed the indications were that that was my condition. GPs have to have a very wide range of knowledge and I suppose they can't be expected to have everything at their fingertips but at least mine was prepared to say I don't know but will look it up. I could accept that. 4500 where the top of the range is 50 is obviously high so the second doctor was right to refer you. I hope your endocrinologist is aware of the implications and will treat with thyroxine. Good luck.

If your other results were ok (? - would be interested to know your TSH score) then your thyroid gland is doing a remarkable job under fairly hefty attack with an autoimmune antibody problem. My TPO result was much lower but elevated TSH and with my history of high TSH and various symptoms my GP diagnosed autoimmune hypothryroidism - which I suppose is hashimotos by another name or just at a low level perhaps. You should definitely keep it monitored. For your first GP to say 'results ok' is outrageous. But that's no surprise here!

Good luck, Andy

Hiya, thanks for your answers. Probably should have said i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in April and put on levothyroxin. Unfortunately it didn't suit me, i had many side effects but the worst was severe joint pain. Came off it in September, pain completely gone but symptoms returned. Dr was hesitant to start me on Armour so fobbed me off with blood tests and wait and see. My thyroid has swelled back up, its a little sore at times. I have a nodule right in the middle, two inconclusive fna's and my surgeon wants me to wait and see what happens. A bit fed up tbh, fingers crossed I get a descent endo, lol. Thanks again and i hope you're both getting the treatment you need xx
