I recently increased from 50mcg to 75 Thyroxine. A couple of weeks later I got itching and a rash which has now spread almost everywhere. Anyone else with these symptoms?

Hi

Could it be that you are taking 2 different brands of thyroxine? You may be having a reaction to one of the fillers.

Thanks for the reply but no, they are the same make/manufacturer. Everything was ok before I increased, I am cutting back now to see if that makes a difference but it could take a couple of weeks.

Absolutely nothing else has changed, I don't understand it. I read somewhere that an itchy rash is a side-effect, but I can't remember where I read it! GP says it is not listed in his book.

I have been on meds for 3 years. About three months ago I began to get lots of itchy patches and, eventually, one breast was completely covered. GP prescribed a steroid cream, but I found greatest relief with Double Base (with pump dispenser) gel which is very soothing.. It dries into skin extremely quickly and cooled and calmed things down.

Updated on Dec 1 2010 8:57AM: I asked the GP to prescribe the Gel.

Did you read about the rash in the thyroxine insert? If so, you can show it to your GP next time you go.

I have been taking various doses of Thyroxine for several years now but have constantly suffered with incredible itching especially on my lower legs and the mound of my thumb which I have practically scratched raw. Lately the itching has also spread to other parts of my body, especially where I seem to have laid down the fat around my middle and breasts as a result of this thyroid problem. Another disturbing symptom I had when I was actually taking more thyroxine than I needed to was that my fingernails started lifting off their nailbeds, and the only way I found out that this was indeed the reason was that I happened to be watching an episode of 'Chicago Hope' in which a character was suffering from a hyper-thyroid... Once I reduced the dosage, my nails miraculously re-attached themselves!
