To early for medication

Hi

Have just had my results, THS 6.64 and T4 13.1. Feeling tired, cold and have put on weight. GP says it's too early for medication and have advised me to have another test in 6 months time. What should I do to feel better?

A TSH of more than 4 puts you at serious risk of heart problems and bone fractures according to the press release by the society of endocrinologists issued in March this year.

Show it to your doctor and if he will not help you, report or sack him. He should be keeping up to date with these prerss releases.

Many countries would diagnose you as hypothyroid with a tsh of 2.5.

Many thanks Nel for the link to the article. This is helpful as I have a raised cholesterol level. Have agreed to see a dietian, but feel this only deals with part of the symptoms and not the cause of my problems.

Also good to know that other countries diagnose at 2.5. Can I get medication at my level in this country?

Well mine is only 2.6 but was done early afternoon, so if done at proper time ie early morning might be higher,.....and my GP listened to my symptoms and said it sounded like I was hypo despite test result and sent me to an Endo . He tested me for EVERYTHING full hormonal screen and am just waiting for the results. You stay with this site and you will get lots of support and be up for the fight it might take.

I've now learned about adrenal stress and it sounds like vie got that as well but who knows till I get the results in 2 weeks. But if the Endo won't help there is enough no how on this site to help me to improve?

Thanks Bunny for your encouraging words. Will try to gather up some courage and go back and ask to be referred to an Endo. Am just trying to read as much as I can to argue my case. How would I go about finding a good place to be referred to?

There is apparantly a list of good doctors and endocrinologists but I think you have to contact the web site admin to get it. you could also check out endocrinologists on drfosterhealth.co.uk and when you find one who specialises in thyroid, ask on here if anyone has any experience of seeing them.

You can get medication in this country, and the press release shows you should definately be reated with a tsh of over 4..

Some docs treat according to symptoms using the tests for back up but they should not rely solely on the tests, which are not a substitute for clinical judgment.

Before the tsh test, the doctors saw raised cholesterol levels as one of the pointers to hypothyroidism.

raised cholesterol also linked to low d3, if d3 is low the cholsterol raises in readiness for a dose of sunshine. The sunshine turns the cholesterol into d3, Get it checked.

Have you got any previous results?

What helped me was that I had four TSH results over quite a long time and the numbers went up at each test.

If that is the case for you, simply pointing that out to your doctor might help. It is quite easy for a busy GP to miss what seems to you an obvious trend. And after all, to some extent the GP is just trying to be sure that it is not a single odd result. (Not that I think that likely given your symptoms.)

Have sent for the Thyroid UK pack so should hopefully get the list of endos.

What is d3 - is it the same as T3 or something completly different?

Have had 3 tests over the last six months both THS and T4 fairly stable at this level.

D3? It's a vitamin. Vitamin D is made by sitting in the sun.... and a lack of it causes all sorts of problems.... well worth googleing it......
