High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) - Hypothyroidism

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience with being hypo having high blood pressure.

I am a 45 year old male - I am in pretty good shape. Exercise everyday and eat pretty healthy. I finally got my thyroid within range. I kinda neglected (only looked at tsh) it for the last couple of years.

My blood pressure has been around 140/88 lately sometimes going up to 150/100. I have added magnesium to my diet to see if that would help but no luck. Does it take a while for the blood pressure to get back to normal if I was indeed low on my t3s?

My regimen is:

6 am - 50mcg Synthroid (levo) + 10 mcg Cytomel (lio)

12pm - 10 mcg Cytomel

4pm - Vitamin D + B12 + Folate Supplements + Magnesium Citrate (400mg)

10pm - 10 mcg Cytomel

thanks for the help.

My latest results are below. It was done around noon. About 12 hours between lio and around 28 hours for last levo dosage.

People here will want to know what your latest thyroid results were: TSH, FT4 and FT3. Also at what time of day you had the test done. TSH can vary according to time of day, 9am is best time to have the bloods done.

What were your latest vitamin results, ferritin, folate, B12 and D3?

Thanks. I edited the post to add my last tests.

Your FT4 is 20% of its range and FT3 is just over 50% of the range. Some people need both of those to be over 50%. It's also important to know that you don't have any other low vitamin levels. What were those latest results? You don't mention ferritin and thats something that many of us struggle with.

How do you feel as well?

Thanks.

My vitamin D is within range. I haven't had a ferritin done yet or B12. Something I am planning to do in my next test next month. I feel fine and starting to sleep well.

Although your vit D3 is in range it could be a bit higher. As hypo people we do suffer from low vitaminlevels due to poor absorption from low stomach acid. If you have low level vits then you cannot use your thyroid hormone properly so the two things are linked and we have to watch it all at the same time to be sure to be at our best. When you get the vitamin results then post here with them to get recommendations.

I take one capsule of 10,000 iu of D3 vitamin which is somewhat high and my vit test is still on the lower end (which supports the low absorption case).

For vit D to be absorbed propery you need to take vit K2 as well. It absorbs better if taken with fats which is why it is sometimes sold in an oil. Magnesium is also required to help it go towards your bones.

Your Vit D is not at the lower end. The Vit D Council, Vit D Society and Grassroots Health all recommend a level of 40-60ng/ml, with a recent blog post on Grassroots Health recommending a level of at least 50ng/ml. Your result falls nicely at the recommended level.

Here is some information about supplementing with Vit D on the Vit D Council's website, and if you scroll down you will see

My level is between 50-60 ng/ml

You’re getting the right amount of vitamin D by the standards set by the Vitamin D Council and Endocrine Society. The Institute of Medicine, however, doesn’t feel there is enough evidence to say that having a level higher than 50 ng/ml is of any benefit.

Some vitamin D researchers believe that these levels are the best to aim for, though more research is needed to be sure about this.

How did you calculate the %? Do you just calculate from the bottom range?

Calculator: thyroid.dopiaza.org/

great link I have always worked them out by basic maths (subtract bottom of range value from top range value , divide it by three, multiply by 2 and add on bottom of the range value to get bottom value of top third of range and you already have the top of the range, my mental arithmetic is rubbish so I have to write it all down too) - what a time saver that calculator is!

Yes, I used to do it with a formula but my brain prefers the easiest route now. That calulator was invented and gifted to us, by the husband of one of our members and is a godsend!

My blood pressure was high for most of my adult life until I started taking rather large doses of T3 only. Then it went down. It's not the size of the dose that counts, nor the level in the blood, it's what gets into the cells. :)

Ash11111 profile image
Ash11111 in reply to greygoose

How long does it take to get in the cells? Is it pretty quick or takes months? I am just starting on the higher dose of t3. I am not sure if I should wait for it to work its magic.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Ash11111

Impossible to say. I should imagine that it's quicker for some people than for others. The reason I need a high dose is because it doesn't get into the cells easily and I need to flood the receptors.

But if you're taking 30 mcg T3 and your FT3 is only 50%, it isn't even getting into the blood very well. By how much have you increased? And what else can you do except wait to see if it works its magic?

Ash11111 profile image
Ash11111 in reply to greygoose

I went from 5mcg and have slowly been increasing it to 30mcg.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Ash11111

OK, so you've only just started 30 mcg. Well, just have to wait and see what effect that has. :)

I think the two are deffinately linked. I can only relate my own experiences...I was diagnosed with hypertension out of the blue when I was fit , healthy diet, ran half marathons, slim etc etc. My lifestyle was healthy so few changes could be made and I ended up taking meds to bring my bp down.

Then later developed a goitre which got gradually bigger so I had a hemithyroidectomy. The result was hypothyroidism....and more meds.

I then had sudden onset rheumatoid disease ......more meds. Through researching my own health and conditions I realise that they are all symptoms and the result of autoimmune disease. The bodys immune system attacking itself and going into overdrive.

They are my thoughts anyway. All the best

Hello Ash11111,

I’m a 55yr old male and have the same conditions as yours.

When I was in my early fourties' my blood pressure was normal eg 120/80. However 10 years ago when I was around 45 my blood pressure started to rise and I used to get extreme headaches all the time. I put that down to not drinking enough fluids.

Every time I had my annual checkup at the GP practice they said my blood pressure was too high. They also said my kidney failure filtration rate was now 52 (nov 2011 was 80). My blood pressure was somewhere in the region of 157/102 at the time and they said it could cause irreversible damage to my kidneys. I bought a blood pressure monitor and used it twice a day for two weeks. I reviewed the results with the GP and we agreed that I should start on a course of blood pressure meds. I needed the maximum dosage of that particular brand and when that wasn't enough they started me on a second brand of blood pressure medicine. Thankfully my blood pressure is now back to normal eg 120/80 and the headaches have also gone.

I’m not overweight but I’m not as active as I used to be. I retired from work when I was 46 due to ill health (spinal problems mainly).

I don’t know why my blood pressure escalated when I hit 45 or what long term harm, if any, the blood pressure medicine is doing to my body.

I hope you find a solution that works for you.

Let us know how you get on.

I always had lowish blood pressure - I never knew the numbers but when routinely taken the nurse would always comment “that’s nice and low”.

Last year an increase in Levo to 100mcg sent my FT4 slightly over range and I had Covid boosters and flu jabs . I had noticeable weight loss and developed haemorrhoids. I reduced the Levo to around 85mcg . Frees are now lower but haven’t put any weight back on. Over two years I’ve dropped just under two stone.

This year my blood pressure was 139 - borderline high. I was a bit shocked as it’s always been low.

I’ve just turned 69 so maybe I shouldn’t be shocked that my health is not to be taken for granted anymore.

Mine was always low c 115/70 and remained so when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (atropic autoimmune thyroiditis) at 53.

I was shocked when I had a well woman check showing the blood pressure was elevated (143/80) but I don’t know exactly when it went up the check was probably at 55) . It’s sitting around 125/78 at the moment so don’t know why it’s improved, I just accepted I was stuck with ever increasing high blood pressure, but it seems I am not.

I keep very fit, lots of running and walking , do a physical job and I am gluten free, I was veggie but now eat fish every so often but not very often. I take NDT (2 grains) after two years of feeling dreadful on Levothyroxine, and I feel very well on it.

I also had a very low heart rate <50 resting but since diagnosis that has gone right up to about 80. Not sure how closely related it is to blood pressure if at all.

My blood pressure was always fine 120.60 all my life, including 3 babies. After the second vax, it shot up and was 200/100. GP put me on BP pills - make me so dizzy I could not walk in a straight line, and did not do much for the blood pressure either. I am now on my 4th different BP meds - all have made me ill in one way or another. The latest one made my face swell, and goodness knows what else, so I have stopped taking them. Heart rate has gone from a constant 70 to 100 at rest. I have no idea what to do next. I wanted the medical profession to find out why, but they wont, just treat the symptoms.

I am a pensioner but still working (farming) and have a very good, low salt diet. I read that red wine is supposed to be good, so am going to try that (well, more of that, if I am honest!) Cheers!

Hi, so if you mean T3 (triiodothyronine), thyroid hormone affects many bodily functions, including blood pressure. Low levels of T3 can cause high blood pressure because thyroid hormones affect the amount of the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline, which regulate blood pressure. If you have really low T3 levels and high blood pressure at the same time, it takes some time for the blood pressure to return to normal during treatment. This depends on your individual condition and the severity of your symptoms. Any drop in blood pressure during treatment should be gradual to avoid any adverse effects. It is important that you monitor your blood pressure and consult with your doctor about any change in symptoms that may be associated with low T3 levels or elevated blood pressure. Your medical care and treatment can be tailored to your needs and depends on your individual situation.

For more information, I would also follow various professional websites that also deal with blood pressure problems (e.g. medicspark.com/diseases/hig... or webmd.com /hypertension -high-blood-pressure/default.htm) :) .
