Hi everyone

I have been offered a trial of T3 for T4T3 combination therapy and the pharmacy is asking which brand of lio I would like. I am in England. Which should I go for? Please could you recommend which seem to be in regular supply? Any advice very much appreciated. Thank you

I don't know which you can rely on because most of them have been somewhat erratic at times.

It matters how the prescription is written. If it says "tablets" you can't expect to get capsules; and vice versa.

It also matters what dosages you want, will get. Only two are available in 5, 10 and 20 micrograms - Morningside (tablets) and Roma (capsules). With Morningside, especially, 10, being much more expensive than Roma.

I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.

This is awesome work. I keep getting confused over Levotho... and lioth... which is T3 and which is T4 ? I need to invent an easy melodic to remember the difference Ty xx

PS:: just looked it up and try to remember that the one with a V in it is like the Roman 5 which is one less than 4 for T4 ..Mind like a seive

LEVOthyroxine (LEVO = 4 letters = T4)

LIOthyronine (LIO = 3 letters = T3)

Thank you very much helvella I think it will be 10mcg (5 morning and evening) with a view to going up to 20mcg daily.

It might be best to request Roma 5 microgram capsules. (You can't satisfactorily split capsules.)

They have an NHS cost of £55 for 28 which is less than others.

Other than one person who could not tolerate the gelatin, they seem to have been fine for most who have received them.

I have not reached this point yet but ever the optimist …. Learning from the many contributors on the forum, is there a 20mcg which can be cut down into 4 pieces of 5mcg? I see some with crosses on them, is this what they are designed for? This could be helpful in times too when actually getting hold of T3 is difficult. One could build up a bit of a backlog for leaner times. AND it would be cheaper if one never got as far as taking the whole 20mcg in one go. Indeed if this type exists, which are they so they can be asked for?

I do not believe any UK thyroid hormone medicine is officially splittable.

Officially, break or score lines being only to a) identify; b) allow division to make swallowing easier.

Ace Cytomel from Netherlands does have a cross on its 25 microgram dosage tablets. And their literature says it can be split in four. (Different from Pfizer Cytomel.)

Mercury Pharma Liothyronine is available in 20mcg tablets and can be cut into approximate quarters with some reliability. It’s made by Advanz Pharma
