Never take iodine supplements unless tested and found to be deficient and under the care of iodine specialist endocrinologist

If on levothyroxine, this contains all the iodine you are likely to need

Iodine use to be used to treat hyperthyroid patients

Have you had a test?

Dairy is a significant contributor of iodine in the UK. (Some dairy-free foods have some iodine added to make them equivalent to the dairy product they seek to replace.)

Iodine test via Genova - see page 3 of pdf

Urine Iodine Test:

Specimen requirements: Urine

Cost: £61.00

Order Code: END25

Turnaround time: 5 - 10 days

Iodine is an essential trace element, vital for healthy thyroid function. Adequate levels are required to enable the production of T3 and T4 thyroid hormones, whilst also being required in other areas of health. Deficiencies can lead to impaired heat and energy production, mental function and slow metabolism. Urine iodine is one of the best measures of iodine status. This test is not performed as a loading test, but can be used to establish existing levels or to monitor iodine supplementation.

How do you know you struggle to get enough iodine? If you're taking any form of thyroid hormone replacement, you'll be getting around 65 mcg iodine for every 100 mcg T4 you take, which is recycled in the body.

What do you think iodine is going to do for you? If won't heal your thyroid, or make it work again. What's more, if your thyroid isn't working, you need less iodine, not more. And, excess iodine can cause all sorts of problems. So, save your money, and don't buy iodine. :)
