Your best bet for advice is from Hidden who has personal experience of issues like yours.

I very much doubt that they are trying to get you off steroids because of the cost as they are relatively cheap to prescribe. Do you have the results for the day curve they did? Full marks to your GP for wanting to clarify the diagnosis they have given you, I'm sure you're aware that Adrenal Insufficiency is a life threatening condition? The base line ACTH test can only be done in hospital as it has to go on ice straight away, this is to show if the hypothalmus & pituitary are working properly ie producing ACTH. The short synacthen test will show how well your adrenal glands are working & producing enough cortisol for you to live a "normalish" life. Both tests will prove whether you have Adrenal Insufficiency or not. Addison's is an autoimmune condition where your adrenal glands don't work at all, while secondary adrenal insufficiency is where the problem is with the hypothalmus or pituitary, which is what I suspect you have. Hope that helps? I'm always happy to help more if I can.
