Can anyone advise supplements to help with Hair loss and Thinning?

I have Hashimoto's and I'm losing my hair - no bald patches as yet but very thin on top and very brittle. It feels like a handfuls come out every time I comb it. I'm on 100mcg Levo, though this has just been increased from 75mcg in the last few days.

I notice that Biotin seems to be recommended but can anyone help with form and how much. Thank you.

Looking at previous posts you had increase to 75mcg seven weeks ago

What were most recent results after this increase

Vitamin D 177 (100-200nmol/l)

Ferritin 185 (15-200ug/L)

Ferritin and vitamin D look fine

Not had B12 and folate tested yet

Suggest you test before considering adding vitamin B complex

Thanks for your reply SlowDragon. Latest test results show TSH is 1.11 ( 0.35-5mu/l) and T4 is 14.6 (46.7% through range). T3 not measured so I did a fingerprick test (Monitor MyHealth ) but the blood was too haemolysed to obtain an accurate Thyroid result so Ive been sent another test kit. No Vitamins or minerals were tested.

My GP raised my Levo dose as I said I felt terrible and though better than on 50mcg ,I was not optimal.

Are you always getting same brand levothyroxine

Obviously you need B12 and folate tested....GP should do so if not been tested

When on 75mcg I had 2 different brands (50+25). I'm taking 2 x 50 at the moment so back to original brand and I'm collecting a new 100pack tomorrow to try and keep brands stable. As for the vitamin testing I will get a home test as lab doesn't test even when GP asks. I just need to find somewhere to get a blood draw rather than a fingertip test kit.

Hypothyroidism/undermedication can cause hair loss. Also certain vitamin deficiencies:

As for different "forms" of biotin, D-Biotin is the naturally occuring biologically active form.

Biotin can slow hairloss if you have biotin deficiency. I have no idea what is considered an appropriate dose.

Biotin rich foods - liver, kidneys, nuts, eggs, dairy products, peanuts, almonds, oatmeal, rice, barley, wheat bran, whole-wheat bread, wild salmon, Swiss chard, cauliflower, avocados and raspberries.

Thanks SeasideSusie. Your reply is really appreciated. I think I will need to get vitamins and Minerals tested soon as I have no idea what my recent levels will be.

You only need to test B12 and folate

Vitamin D and ferritin results from recently

Vitamin D 177 (100-200nmol/l)

Ferritin 185 (15-200ug/L)

You may be developing alopecia areata so I would ask for a proper diagnosis.

I have alopecia areata. My hair has fallen out every year for a number of years but it has grown back slowly - in about six months. Every March I got my first haircut of the year. Then, for summer, hair fell out.

I haven't had a hair cut for 2 years now.

I have been diagnosed as having a rare autoimmune disease (which is a collection of autoimmune conditions). I used to get my new hair tidied up about six months after it had grown back and that was every October except this year it hadn't grown back at all.

I bought some tablets from Holland and Barratt:

It is called Skin - Hair - Nails and it is in a dark blue bottle and contains 120 tablets. After six months I now have some patchy hair growth (keeping in mind I was completely bald).

It may not work as I would like it to do or for everyone and we do feel very vulnerable if we've no hair. Obviously there's an attack on my hair follicles.

shaws I appreciate you sharing information about your condition and suggesting the skin hair and nail supplement. I’ll have a look at it. Thank you.

Piglet1956,

Common causes of hair loss in hypothyroidism is a change in balance of hormones or low iron levels. As your ferritin looks ok, if it is a new symptom it should hopefully resolve itself once thyroid hormones are optimised.
