I have hashimoto, diagnosed last year and was wondering how likely my son and daughter will also be diagnosed with it, as both showing symptoms of under active thyroid, but TSH normal.

It can be a genetic tendency, but definitely not guaranteed

There’s many and varied reasons for developing autoimmune disease

Perhaps consider FULL thyroid and vitamin testing including thyroid antibodies every few years

If your children are under 18 Blue Horizon will test minors

I have hashimoto too, but no one in my family had issue with thyroid as far as I know. Hypothyroidism can be , but I am not sure for hashimoto .

I have no history of Hashimoto's, but an aunt had lupus (another autoimmune disease). After having my genetic info analyzed with data from Ancestry .com, it seems that I have a pre-disposition to Hashimoto's. As someone else said though, there are many factors at play, so having a pre-disposition doesn't mean that the disease will present itself or not. I've only been diagnosed for 3 years and I'm in my 60's, so avoided it for the earlier parts of my life even with my pre-disposition.

in my (little) family it seems about 50/50my maternal grandmother , (and ? her mother too )may well have had thyroid issues showing up after birth of 2nd child , and reappearing in old age , bit no proof of this. But her sister did not have any bother.

Of her 2 daughters the first (my mum ) was fine , but the second got ?Graves, semi thyroidectomy , levo treatment for life.

My mum had 2 kids, my brother is fine

I was diagnosed autoimmune hypothyroid after 2nd child,

Both my kids are under 30 and no issues yet.

Diagnosed with hypothyroidism in my late sixties, I was the first in my family, with just one case of an auto-immune condition, RA, in one aunt. I don't have RA, but I do have lupus. One daughter was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in her late thirties, having had a diagnosis of coeliac disease several years earlier. My other daughter is so far free from AI issues. We can all be genetically predisposed to certain conditions, but that does not mean that we will definitely develop them.

It's interesting! A private FDN I once saw asked me if either of my parents or grandparents had ever had tuberculosis. I asked why he wanted to know and he said there was a link between Tuberculosis and Asthma presentation in families (I'm asthmatic) he said the asthma may have contributed to developing Hashimotos but didn't elaborate further. I saw a video by Dr Berg, and he explained that asthma is essentially a complication of low cortisol so maybe there's some feedback mechanism going on ?

Anecdotally I do think genetics plays a large part in developing Hashimotos and probably food to a greater degree than we realise. My mother has ulcerative colitis, and my Aunt and several other relatives have large goitres and asthma and food allergies are a running theme on both sides.

Thanks for the reply, also have asthma in the family but didn’t know about the low cortisol issue, and also have food allergies, but my sister and brother seem to have escaped all of them.
