Any experience with Armour NDT

Boon79 profile image
18 Replies

So I’ve been unable to purchase Thai NDT for months, and the Endocrinologist put me back into levothyroxine. I did ok on Mercury Pharma in that I was no longer bloated and pumping the weight on BUT I felt very depressed and tearful some days.

I have now managed to buy Armour NDT,

Does anyone have any experience of this medication?

I have been supplementing with Vit D spray and Ferrous Sulphate for the past three months, so I think that my levels are good,

I did OK on the original Armour, but it no longer worked for me after they changed it. My experience with all theses thyroid meds is that some work for some people, and some don't. The only way to know for sure is to try them.

I am still fighting to get T3 off my endo as he has agreed that thyroxine does work for me. The problem is that doctors don't decide what is good for us, the accountants do.

Thanks Hypopotamus. I put my post on because I have read that many don’t get on with the new formulation.I’m willing to give it a try though.

I fair pretty well on Mercury Pharma levothyroxine, but getting that is almost impossible. TEVA is always available and I have to battle not to be given it on a monthly basis!

I used to be on Armour did well until they changed the filler and that affected my uptake so switched to a different NDT. Currently on Accella NP Thyroid. I do well on that one but others have complained recently about it. So you have to find the one that suits you. The only way is to try them out. I do much better on a ndt then combination of synthetic thyroid horomnes -levothyroxine and Liothyronine.

Key to utilisation of thyroid hormones is b12 so make sure that is in the upper part of the range. Commonly low in hypothyroidism.

You need to test vitamin D and ferritin BEFORE starting any supplements

And retest ferritin levels regularly when taking any iron supplements

Important to do full iron panel test. You can have high iron and low ferritin. Then iron supplements would be dangerous to take, as iron is toxic in excess

Recommend you get B12 and folate tested too

The GP is currently monitoring both iron and ferritin for me. Hopefully this will put me in good standing.

I switched from Naturethroid to Armour a couple of years ago. I wouldn’t say it’s perfect for me but I’ve stuck with it. Currently taking between 3.5 to 4 grains.

Thanks for all of your replies.I used to take 50mcg of levothyroxine with 1 grain of Thai NDT and felt great.

Is 1 grain of Armour likely to be the same?

I would start low and work your way up. I was on levothyroxine 50mcg only and I cut a 1 grain pill in half. Now I take two pills of a one 30 mg and a one 15 mg to make a total of 45 mg. I do this to avoid cutting pills.

What I wondered is whether one brand of NDT is similar or equivalent to other brands?I’m a dab hand at introducing NDT.

I don’t think so as they have different fillers etc. The same goes with what consumers are reporting. Some say Armour was working for them, but changed ..... once changed the NDT used at times was at different doses. As for me I report benefits. I did try at some point to do a full grain but I was on over drive and went down to my current dose 45 mg.

I agree that response seems so individual. I did really well on Armour for a short time, and then just crashed. Cutting out wheat was a big thing for me. I started taking ashwaghanda and rhodiola along with vit D, selenium, iron, zinc and coQ10. Eventually I was on levothyroxine with T3 too which was a the winning formula for me. Good luck on your journey.

Hi Boon79I completely understand how you feeling.Levothyroxine was making irritable, anxious, and fatigue. I personally did the switch and shortly after noticed improvement. Please not that I eat a gluten free diet, exercise, and supplement with vitamin D, vitamin k, magnesium, and iron. Three months and monitoring blood levels in between I increased dosage and I feel great. Just recently I’ve started to feel tired, but I know it’s because of my PMDD. In a week I’ll be back to normal. Please note that Armour works best if your labs are optimal or close to it. Good luck and be patient it works.

I tried Armour but it didn’t work well. I was told they can’t get the exact mcg amount, so you never can get a defined measurement like in a synthetic.

I felt better mixing NDT with levothyroxine than I ever did on synthetic alone.

Me too, I feel better if I mix levo and ndt than synthetic or ndt alone. On ndt alone my ft4 drops to much, below the limit so I need to add some levo. Still experimenting

And what doses are you taking now (ndt&levo) and how much levothyroxine have you taken before, may I ask you?

It’s good to know that the Levo/ NDT mix works for others too and not just me.A few days ago I started on 50mcg levothyroxine and 30mcg Armour. I’ll wait another 10 days until I increase the Armour to 1 grain of 60mcg as I can already feel that I’ll need it!

How did you obtain Armour? I have done well on T3 but having stopped taking tramadol the t3 affects my digestive system. Has anyone any experience of this?
