Hello everyone. Can anyone recommend any books by Dr Lowe? I’m interested in furthering reading but not site which one to invest in.

Thank you

It depends on how much detail you want, and whether you can find either of his published books. Your Guide to Metabolic Health is a useful but very general read. If you want to get into the nitty gritty of thyroid physiology, and are particularly interested in tissue resistance to thyroid hormone, then I'd go for The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia.

Helvella has brought together the available links from Dr Lowe's archived website, along with a few of the papers that appeared in the now-defunct journal he founded, Thyroid Science: dropbox.com/s/w7cjut689r1w1...

You're welcome. And thanks again for compiling it all. :-)

Thank you very much for the link, I just checked out the cost of the book and it’s more than I can afford ;)

Keep a look out for it on the used book dealer sites. That's how I found an affordable copy...eventually.

Thank you, I will do. It’s such a shame that even the research is so impossible to compile. Thank goodness for this site.

I've just read Your Guide to Metabolic Health and it's pretty good. I would love to get hold of The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia but it's out of print and has astronomic prices for second hand copies. I regret not buying it many years ago, I thought it a little expensive but in retrospect it wasn't.

There's a video he did for Thyroid UK youtube.com/watch?v=820kE-t... .

Also, Dr Skinner did an excellent book called Diagnosis and Management of Hypothyroidism which is still published.

Currently available from about £290.

(I think that is a lot of money!)

I bought the book when it was published and lent it to a friend who had been diagnosed with Fibromalgia but sadly despite requests was never returned to me lol...... 😩

For me the most pertinant part was considering the whole metabolism and ensuring all aspects were treated. Mainly T3 or ndt treatment but even Dr Lowe found that there was a cohort that didnt respond to his treatments but the vast majority did. I like the fact that he picked up on the need to balance the body holistically. For example I think the importance of B12 in thyroid function is usually over looked by most mainstream medics.

Thyroid blood tests, the invention of synthetic hormones, simplistic rigid treatment protocols which believe in one approach for all, estrogen imbalance caused by excess extrogen in environment and the general lowering of vitamin and mineral content in mass produced fruit and veg have been disastrous. Add in the plastic disaster and its effects and its no wonder our bodies are struggling. Sorry to be so depressing!

I like the fact that Dr Lowe stepped back and looked at how our whole bodies worked rather than splitting off little sections and treating like its not all connected. I call it doctoring by numbers which is what most of us experience these days rather than being treated by a doctor who has a true wholelistic understanding of how our bodies work. Sorry will get off my pedalstool now!! Haha!

Gosh that doesn’t sound fair, I would keep asking for it back.

Yes I’m very interested in reading that particular book but it’s like gold dust. I wonder why the family don’t print more?

I have a bit of a journey most recently realised I have a big issue with hypoglycaemia but the last time I went keto I couldn’t fat adapt. The book world be helpful to see if there were solutions to these issues.

Thanks for your reply ;)

Thanks Arabella. I tried and tried but in the end she said she couldnt find it. Some people dont value books or other people's belongings! Lol....

Yes that same as me I would love to read it. I wasn’t sure about skinners book as I’m not on an NDT. Thank you for your response

Dr Skinner's book is about Hypothyrodism. He did prescribe NDT but also prescribed levothyroxine and liothyronine.

Yes I saw it and I nearly bought it but I wanted something based more on t3 only. Do you think it’s worth it for impaired sensitivity?

Have you found Paul Robinson's books and website ?

Arabella33 profile image
Arabella33 in reply to Marz

I have indeed but his scientific analysis is very different to Dr Lowes, who advocates a single large t3 dose that releases in waves over several days. I tried splitting the dose but it’s not very effective for me and I’m on what’s considered supraphysiological. I’d love to check out the science outlined by Dr Lowe but unfortunately the books are not in print any longer and the prices sky high

Thank you for the advice

Could you put in a request to your local library? You used to be able to get all sorts of books through inter-library requests. I don’t know if they still do that though but it might be worth a try.

Indeed that’s good idea, I do believe the book is like gold dust and academic books seem to harder to come by. I will definitely it investigate the that however. Thanks
