Hurthle Cell adenoma

Anyone ever had one of these on your thyroid? I read it usually happens to women ages 70-80 but I was 27 when I had a golf ball sized hurthle cell adenoma removed along with half my thyroid. The only symptom prior to that was fatigue for about a decade. I don't hear much talked about it and not a lot written on the subject. Thank you

I had one removed when I was 56, am 63 now. Not on levothyroxine but do feel tired and achy in the winter months. I believe mine may have happened because of radiotherapy to the chest wall when I was 45. I spent a year waiting to be operated on, they did biopsies some of which failed. I was told only a 5 per cent chance of needing to take levothyroxine. I used to take selenium and zinc and think it may be a good idea to restart it. It’s remembering to take it.

HI there, Thank for your reply. I had slight fatigue, cystic acne, and hypoglycemia for years before I got the hurthle cell adenoma. I suspect I had subclinical hypo for many years and that it may have been environmental and nutritional because I went off to work on a cruise ship in Hawaii for two years and all my symptoms went away. All that walking, swimming in the ocean and Vitamin D did wonders. As soon as I left the ship I developed terrible acne and went on a low dose of isotretinoin. I'm highly suspicious this may have stimulated the adenoma since I had sub clinical hypo. Then I put on 10 lbs of water bloat. After my surgery I felt pretty good for two years but the slight fatigue came back and my TSH was 5 and elevated so the endo said I should go on Levo and that most people after partial thyroidectomy have to go on Levo but he never told me that prior to suggesting the surgery and the surgeon said the other side should pick up the slack. I also waited a year for surgery after they couldn't get anything from the fine needle biopsy and it grew quickly. I've been on Levo for ten years because I don't want to chance another growth and it's clear my thyroid struggles to produce enough hormone. It's great you can live without Levothyroxine and I regret going on it so soon.
