Hi all, could I get some advice on my cortisol result?
My cortisol level was tested recently at 8.30am via a blood test. It’s come out as 307 with the range being 101 to 536.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Also, is it meaningless without being tested throughout the day to get a better picture? E.g. via a synacthen stimulation test or saliva test?
Thanks in advance!

Cortisol varies throughout the day being at it's highest point first thing in the morning & then dropping through the day. Your result of 307nmol/Ls may be considered slightly on the low side but if you're not on the oestrogen pill, HRT or supplements with biotin in which can elevate cortisol results, then I doubt that anyone would test you for adrenal insufficiency. However if you are losing weight, get dizzy, sleep a lot, have skin pigmentation then they may test you. The early morning cortisol is a good marker for adrenal insufficiency so you don't really need to do a test through the day. Hope that helps?
Thank you v much for your reply - I managed to get this initial blood test as I take oral steroids on and off for my asthma which can cause secondary AI. I argued for it as I do have a lot of the symptoms of AI (but appreciate they could be down to other things). The result is considered ‘normal’ as it’s in range and a GP has not arranged a follow up call to discuss it... but as you say it is a little on the low side so I wonder if I’d have any luck asking to be referred for the ACTH / synacthen test.
