Saline .

I am taking medication for an under active thyroid. Recently due to the hot weather, I drank at lot of water, which resulted of my being hospitalized needing a saline infusion. Thought I would be fine. But after 4 weeks I still feel unwell.

Difficult to get a doctors appointment . Don't know what to do. ?????🤔

I notice you have said you are diabetic.

Without thyroid bloods it would be difficult to offer any advice.

You could try taking rehydration salts. Supermarkets and pharmacies are likely to sell them :

tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p...

tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p...

boots.com/boots-rehydration...

Any of the above options would do the job and would be worth a try - no prescription required and they can be given to adults, or children aged 1 and over, so the chances of them causing a problem are very small. They supply a small dose of salt(sodium) and a small dose of potassium, with a small amount of glucose.

Many thanks for your advice, I certainly will try the rehydration salts.

Peachandcream You need to rebalance the salt in your body as soon as possible to help you. It will have seriously depleted and it’s said (don’t quote me

on this!) that thyroid patients benefit from good quality pink salt to help our bodies function properly. Works for me 😊.

Both Insulin resistance and type 1 & 2 diabetes can cause dehydration when the kidneys are overworked and that in turn causes people to drink excessive amounts of water. If it is related to diabetes, then it’s usually a sign of too much glucose in the blood. I’d suggest reducing carbohydrates if you have a relatively high amount which will stop your body from working so hard. That should make you less thirsty and help balance your blood sugars.

I hope you feel better soon xx

I cannot thank you enough for your reply. Makes sense , will increase my salt intake. Previously, was very wary of useing salt . Take care.

I’d keep trying for a doctors appointment. You say it resulted in a hospital visit so you probably need following up with blood tests if you’re still unwell.

I’d be tempted to try one of these sports drinks that replace salts, but on here we are all guessing and for all we know you were rushed there in an ambulance, so it’s maybe too important to guess at.

I agree.

There have been some serious issues caused by excess water consumption. There are times support forums reach the limits of their capacity to help. And this, I think, is one such case.

It is way outside the experience of general thyroid patients.

A doctor is required. If appropriate, ring 111. Tests are vital.

Many thanks for your reply. You are right, I should try for a doctors appointment. Particulary as the hospital sent out to my GP to do updates.

Then they definitely should be following up. Best of luck!

Try 111. My step mother has low sodium and was hospitalised. Granted she is very elderley but it caused confusion to the point where she could not think straight. Sometimes if you ring 111 they will help you get an appointment

If you are type diabetic and have Hashimotos you should perhaps be tested for Addison's disease. They can all occur together.
