Bovine NDT dosage advice

NDT dosage advice- would 40mg NDT be equivalent to 40mg synthetic thyroxin?

Starting Allergy Research Group's NDT as my Thailand go-to is no longer trading.

NDT contains both T4 and T3. T3 is considered to be more potent than T4. The NDT you are buying should state what levels of T4 and T3 they contain, and only once you know that can you tell what it might be equivalent to in terms of Levothyroxine.

Note that some thyroid products that are sold have no thyroid hormones in them at all and are sold as "thyroid support".

Presumably you mean Allergy Research Thyroid Natural Glandular with 40mg Bovine thyroid?

This is not NDT, like many others this is a thyroid glandular with no declared hormone content so you have no idea if there is any T4 or T3 in it, and if there is there is no indication of how much.

Plus synthetic thyroxine comes in mcg (micrograms) here in the UK not mg (milligrams) which is a very much larger amount - 1000mcg = 1mg

Metavive isn't NDT, again it's a glandular with no declared hormone content.

No. NDT has set amounts of T4 and T3 which is strictly controlled during it's production process, and is prescription only (unless you go for the Thai NDT). Anything that says "Thyroid Glandular" and can be bought without prescription is not NDT nor does it have any declared hormone content. The reply you had from Allergy Research is quite clear in that it doesn't know exactly how much hormone there is but that they do test and have a limit of hormone content, but you still don't know how much you are getting, if any.

Allergy Research Group's supplement is not NDT and does not have a declared amount of hormone in it, so no way to know. If it was similar to NDT (and it probably isn't) you'd need to find out the amount of actual dried thyroid in the capsule, then do the maths based on NDT (where one grain or 60mg tablet contains approx 38mcg T4 and 9mcg t3). Or write to them and ask. Levo comes in 25mcg increments so I doubt you'd be taking 40mg anyway.

Bovine products have different ratios to porcine products. Good for some: bad for others. We might expect that, if it has any thyroid hormone content at all, there would be a higher T4:T3 ratio in bovine.

When companies say how much a dose of desiccated thyroid or glandular contains, they are saying how much gland it contains - which will include thyroglobulin and other proteins, etc. Whereas with levothyroxine and liothyronine the dosages are based on the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API).

Our glandular supplements are rather unique in that we do not defat or wash out the natural compounds before they are lyophilized in a very specific way which retains as much of their bioactive compounds as possible. While this is not a standardized hormone replacement product, we do test batches of it to confirm that it contains low levels of T3 and T4. We would not release a batch for purchase if it contains over 2.25 mcg per capsule of T3, and over 9.5 mcg per capsule of T4. So you can rely on any levels lower than that.

Update

Having been on Metavive 2 for past six weeks, a thyroid blood test taken yesterday shows my T4 and T3 levels are now back into the lower end of normal range.
