Voice change

Since and even a couple weeks before finding out I’m hypothyroid I noticed my voice feeling strained when I talk ... not hoarse but weak ... like I’m having to push my words out.... I’m starting on Levothyroxine at 25mcg going up to 50mcg in six weeks but my question is this.... has anyone else’s voice been affected and if so in what way and secondly once I get my thyroid sorted (which I know can be tricky) but if and when it does get normal then will my voice get back to normal again?

Very common...hoarse voice, deeper voice, tire easily etc

Sorry, but mine hasn't gone back to normal, and I don't think I could be any more sorted than I am now.

What is yours like? When I speak mine feels like it would feel if you were looking high up above your head and trying to talk... and are you hypo or hyper?

I have Hashi's, so I've been both.

My voice is deeper, and cracks a lot. I don't have much of a vocal range, so can't sing anymore, and can't throw my voice. It's weak and feeble.

Yes mine felt weak for years before I was diagnosed 15 mnths ago. Not deep or croaky - I wish it was! Cant sing anymore. People dont hear me at all if they are some distance away. I lose it altogether if I talk continually for more than 2 mins 😞

Mine was definitely affected, weak, croacky, couldnt read a story to my children etc, but it's normal again now. I have had my thyroid removed now, so that may be why its improved.

I was hyper and it affected my voice. I hadn’t realised how much until I tried to sing along to Christmas carols and songs I’d sung in the past and I just couldn’t sing. I realised I was ‘cured’ when I went to our town band concert and I could belt out the songs, descents n all. So if hyper can affect your voice I can’t see why being hypo shouldn’t.

Hopefully you will get your voice back but if not you could ask to be referred to or find yourself a speech therapist to help you improve things.

I love music and my son plays the piano and guitar. I used to be able to sing before I got my goiter now if I attempt to sing I sound like lee Marvin singing " Wand'rin Star" lol 😄

Hi there - a weak voice can be attributed to the adrenal glands being weak. I always know when I am due more steroid if my day is getting a bit 'heavy' as my voice gets what I would call 'operation tired' - it sounds like I have just had an operation and can hardly raise the energy to talk to anyone. This is different to the croaky hoarse thyroid voice affecting the voice box this is from another source. Try taking Vitamin C 1,000 mg - not slow release type - and this will give the adrenals a bit of help - Vitamin C is grabbed by the adrenal glands to support its work and you may find this helps - also B complex.

At last! I have mentioned this to my endo and he referred to me to ent, who says mine was because I suffer with acid reflux. The odd thing is, when I was diagnosed over 5 years ago, with reflux that is, the consultant thought it was odd that I didn’t have heartburn or indigestion. In February 19 my voice went completely, so I was referred to the speech therapist, who gave me exercises to do. I’ve seen her three times and now she has discharged me, I don’t think she knows what it is tbh but no one mentioned that it could be my thyroid. My voice is still croaky and strained and breaks a lot when I am talking which is frustrating. I used to sing a lot but I’ve given that up as a bad job. Anyway I was started on Levo a month ago, same as you 25mg, so will be having bloods done in about 2 weeks time. By the way, I’ve had two partial thyroidectomies and RAI two years ago.
