Hi there what are your osteopenia symptoms ?

or have you had a DEXA scan, if so what are your results?

I have a similar TSH reading to yours and I take T3 and T4 but my T3 and 4 results are well within range as are yours.

Does your doctor have x ray vision so that he can see your bones? Only joking that was said "tongue in cheek"

Hi,

Yes did have a dexa scan and showed signs of osteopenia, I was quite surprised as I have always been pretty active. But think thyroid has it’s part to play.Think I need better supplements for bone health don’t know which combo though.

Didn’t have any symptoms, consultant wanted bone density checks as Tsh low

I also had a DEXA scan back in January, which showed I had osteopenia , they at first said osteoporosis and recommended bisphosphonates but I asked for the actual results ( T scores ) and I fall into the osteopenia range.

My endo wanted to have a DEXA scan because I recently started self medicating with T3.

I am quite active , now , since I seem to have hit on the correct dosage of T3, I do quite a lot of Nordic walking and I don't really want to take bisphosphonates if I can avoid them.

I take Vit D 3000iu daily + K2 ( better you mouth spray- I had problems absorbing tablets probably down to Hashimotos and low stomach acid)

I take Magnesium 2x 400mg ( one is a mix of different types of magnesium the other is magnesium citrate).

Vit C 2 g daily ( split into 2 doses)

Co Q10 300 mcg

B complex containing all the B's with Folate as methylfolate and B12 as methylcobalamin.

I have also bought some Boron 3mg daily and have just started taking that.

Hope that helps.:)

How old are you and what other health conditions do you have besides thyroid?

I had surgical menopause 16yrs ago (on estrogen) and then a Thyroidectomy for cancer 3 yrs ago have always been on (combo) of T3/T4 meds. My TSH has always been kept low to reduce the recurrence of thyroid cancer (this is a joke). Anyway.

10 yrs ago had my (1st Dexa scan) diagnoised with mild osteopenia. (NOT on thyroid meds NO thyroid issues but I had early Menopause due to surgery)

2 yrs ago had my (2nd Dexa scan) diagnoised with mild osteopenia. (ON thyroid meds and NO thyroid)

I'm not a believer that low TSH or taking T3/T4 combo thyroid meds puts you at a higher risk for osteopenia.... I personally think genetics and preexisting health conditions (like mine) life battle with Psoriasis played a much bigger role along with early menopause.

Hi,

I have inhalers for mild asthma ,other than that no other pre existing conditions. The osteopenia could just be a symptom of menopause I guess. will probably have another dexa scan next year.

That’s a possibility my 80 yr old mother had a Dexa scan late last year she was also given Mild Osteopenia.

Low vitamin D obviously needs improving

GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

But with Hashimoto’s improving Vitamin D to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average. Likely to need at least 3000iu daily to improve levels

Government recommends everyone supplement October to April

Your folate is very low. Supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be beneficial.

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

B vitamins best taken in the morning after breakfast

Igennus Super B complex are nice small tablets. Often only need one tablet per day, not two. Certainly only start with one tablet per day after breakfast. Retesting levels in 6-8 weeks

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

As you have Hashimoto’s are you on strictly gluten free diet?

Hi

Thanks for all the information. No I'm not gluten free but considering it.

Do you think my results show overmedication with ndt ?

Hi again,

Your Free T4 and T3 are well within range , it is your TSH which doctors may query because it is below the bottom of the range .

I would suggest you should go by how you feel, my TSH is similar to yours and my free T's are slightly higher but I feel great .

TSH is a pituitary hormone which is put out when you do not have enough circulating thyroid hormone made by your own thyroid, If you take NDT or T3 ( as in my case) your TSH is always going to be low or below range.

If your doctor, is cooperative say that you would prefer to have another DEXA scan in 1-2 years to see if you are actively losing bone or I believe their is a urine test that can be conducted to see if your bone turnover rate is excessive.

I am going to do just that when I speak to the doctor next if they even begin to suggest I should stop taking T3 , it has given me my life back. I am actively doing all I can to improve my bone density with supplements and exercise I would much prefer to go down the route first. before taking the T3 I could hardly move off the sofa let alone do any exercise , which was no good for my bones either!

Good luck.:)

No

They show lowish Ft3 and very low Ft4

Low vitamins need improving

Gluten free diet may help improve gut function

Apologies if I misled with my reply, what I meant was that they are no way showing over medication, but a doctor might argue that because the TSH was low.

They are low in range which would suggest under rather than over medication.

I try to go by how I feel and not take too much notice of my TSH now.

I too am completely gluten free and this has reduced my antibodies to virtually nil.

My T4 seems to stay low.I will take additional supplements as advised. I’m glad you don’t think I am over medicated as I seem to function pretty well on 2grains Naturethroid.
