Very very upper chest pain

Hi,

I'm 22 years old and very very upper chest pain. I've been diagnosed with costochondritis, but this is further up and to the left (not at all near heart). It's very inconsistent, it happened yesterday eve and then again last night and in the shower this morning. Not agony at all, quite mild pain, kind of sharp & achy? My paramedic friend reckons it's muscle pains?

For context, I have severe hypochondria as well.

Whilst we are happy to help with anything thyroid related, nobody here is medically qualified so we're not able to offer any suggestions as to what might possibly be wrong. If your paramedic friend has examined you then he may well be right, after all he will have had a lot of training. If you are still worried you should ring 111 or take yourself off to A and E.

Whilst I agree entirely with SeasideSusie , I would just like to say that I don't believe in hypochondria! If you think there's something wrong with you then the odds are, there is! You may interpret the symptoms wrongly (e.g. chest pain could be indigestion rather than a heart attack) but you know your body and you know what it should feel like - the two of you have lived together for years! Far too many hypos get labeled as being hypochondriac just because their doctors don't know what's wrong with them. But, just because a doctor doesn't know what's wrong with you, doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with you! Don't put yourself down like that.

That's very true. I had a two year fight on my hands with my son, when he had problems with his eyes, and teachers and doctors alike were accusing him of putting it on and trying to dodge school. In the end, his problem not only turned out to be very real but easily fixed. If only doctors had stopped blaming him - the patient - and done their jobs.

My youngest suffered debilitating tummy pains that were so bad one Sunday we had an appointment with an out of hours GP at his house ! He diagnosed abdominal migraine which I had not heard of at the time.

She was 51 last week and had thyroid cancer some years ago followed by an unusual bone cancer in her leg. I do wonder about gut issues being an early warning sign of thyroid issues - especially auto-immune.

So yes we must pay attention ...
