For clarity, the gene that affects T4 to T3 conversion is called DIO2 - that is, three letters and a number. Not D102 - a letter and three numbers. Not DI02 - two letters and two numbers.

The name comes from the enzyme that this gene affects which is a deiodinase. It removes an iodine atom from a thyroid hormone molecule - it deiodinates it.

On this forum we probably understand, but if you wish to look it up anywhere, it might help to get it right. If you are discussing with a doctor, and get it wrong, you are providing an excuse for them to dismiss what you say.

Thank you. I will be careful.

Are you heterozygous or homozygous DIO2?

Have you got Hashimoto’s?

Couldn’t see any thyroid antibodies or vitamin test results in previous posts?

Are you on strictly gluten free diet?

Vitamin levels need to be optimal before considering adding T3

Thank you. I am heterozygous and type 2. I dont have hashimotos it seems and antibodies negative. I have been gluten free in the past to no noticable benefit. I take plenty of vit D with K2 and inject B12. I have not had iron and folate tested for a while. Will probably get full range done before referral to endo. I have been taking 25mcg a day of T3 for about a year to great benefit. I dont take levo.

So you just take 25mcg T3?...nothing else?

Most with Dio2 take 10, 15 or 20mcg T3 alongside levothyroxine....frequently as small split doses

If only on T3 p, dose is typically higher than 25mcg per day

I have been thinking about increasing but worry about supplies. I will take my pulse and temp. Sometimes I can feel that my brain needs a bit more. Maybe I will up by another half of 25.

Usual advice is to only increase by 1/4 tablet at a time (5mcg/6.25mcg ......depending if you have 20mcg or 25mcg tablets)

Recommend getting full thyroid and vitamin testing first ....then ,.....if do increase...retest in 6-8 weeks

Thank you, will do. It seems my GP surgery is closed currently except to urgent cases.

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3 £29 (via NHS private service )

Thankyou. I was not aware of private NHS service. my GP will take T3, he has already offered, just a matter of waiting a couple of weeks until things calm down at the surgery I gather.
