Can anyone tell me if I’m right in thinking soya products are a no no in thyroid conditions and why .

My friend is thinking of buying some stuff ,mainly soya base, for her ‘ menopausal’ symptoms but she has hypothyroidism, being treating .

She well beyond the menopause age and I think it’s her treatment /dose but she is one who thinks doctor know best unfortunately.

Soya disrupts the thyroid hormones getting into the cells. It is recommended that we avoid it particularly if we have to take special care to keep our thyroid problems on an even keel.

Soy, unless it’s fermented such as tempeh & tamari, reduce thyroid hormone production & conversion, as well as cellular uptake.

I don't think it affects conversion, does it?

I read somewhere, probably on here, that it does, hence being the worst of the goitrogens. My NDT worked nicely once I stopped being in denial about how healthy it is. I’ve excluded other goitrogens but nothing else made a difference.

OK :)

Other goitrogens don't really need excluding because they're unlikely to affect someone on thyroid hormone replacement.

Soya is definitely out for thyroid problems and I found it was absolutely no help for menopause either. It's also bad for the planet environmentally - encourages monoculture and has to be transported a long way

And cultivators are destroying the rain forests to have more room to grow it! Along with palm oil, of course.

My personal opinion is that nobody should consume soy. It's very bad in so many ways. I don't consider it to be food. There is this myth that the Japanese consume a lot of it, so it must be good for you! But they don't. They use it as a condiment, a little bit at a time - you wouldn't have a plate of mustard or ketchup for lunch, would you?! Just a little bit on the side. And it's usually fermented. They don't make a main meal of unfermented soy like people do in the west. It's just ludicrous.
