SOS - accident - not thyroid related

Yesterday my husband fell (there was a pothole) crossing the road and pulled me down with him. He is perfectly ok apart from a grazed finger, but I fell on my right side and the side of both knees. We were very near our medical centre, so went in and were seen by a nurse. She bathed and dressed my knees, but later my neck and back began to be very painful, and I've been up in the night.

I've had Epsom salts baths and have applied various stuff like comfrey ointment and Biofreeze, as well as using my TENS machine..My arms and chest muscles are also painful. It's an exaggeration and enlargement of an existing problem - neck, mid-back and rib pain, but now the pain is worse and over a larger area. The knees also hurt when walking, and the left one is very bruised.

I know no one can advise, so I'm just waffling really. The exact same thing happened last year, except then his shoe caught on the edge of a pavement. That time I sort of landed mainly on him, so didn't suffer, and he was all right.

I have a physio appointment on Tuesday anyway. Just wonder if there's anything else I could do till then - of course I'm also taking paracetemol.

I can't really offer anything constructive. If there is a chance you've broken any bones then perhaps you need to go to A&E rather than just suffer with it? Do you have osteoporosis? If you do then obviously your chances of breaking a bone are much greater than if you didn't.

Bear in mind that it is possible to take paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time, and doing so is likely to be more effective than either on their own. Check you don't overdose on either of them - follow the dosing instructions on the packets.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, humanbean. I don't think anything is broken, but I don't really know the state of my bones. Also taking Ibuprofen, I forgot to say.

Don't be a martyr if the pain doesn't ease fairly quickly or if you can't control it yourself with OTC painkillers. See a doctor or go to your local A&E and get X-rays. It's a pity it's the weekend and GP surgeries will be shut.

Other possibilities...

Do you have a walk-in NHS clinic in your area? They may be open at weekends if you need to see a doctor. There is one in my area but I always forget it exists.

And don't forget there is always 111 - although I gather the response times are awful.

I think there is a walk in. It does feel more muscular.

Sorry to hear of your fall - hope you are better soon and not feeling so much pain. 💐 Hubby sounds as if he may have some balance issues. Do you know his B12 level ? Can he pass the Rhomberg test ? ( spelling ? )

More likely the pothole .They cause many accidents to cyclists and damage to cars.I reported a large one before Xmas but instead of being filled three more have appeared close by .

It is an enormous pothole, and he said it was in his blind spot in one eye.

Yes I agree - but there was mention of another incident with the pavement !

He was wearing rubber-soled shoes that time, and one sole stuck to the pavement (he said).

I think you'd have to make an official complaint re the pothole as you cannot foresee the future if it (hopefully not) gives you more symptoms.

The nurse mentioned that. I think she said that it would have to have been one that had been reported aleady, although that sounds a bit odd.

What! we have to wait on the pavement to await a pothole appearing.

I'd certainly make an official complaint. Someone may have already. or I'm sure some car owners might well have done too.

Yes, I'm looking into it.

I'd go back and take a photo of it and put in a complaint sending them the photo

I don't think he has, though I see what you mean! He can stand on one leg for a long time.

Wow - great news ! Can he walk heel to toe in a straight line - if so then try it with eyes closed. I cannot do any of it !!

I don't think he's tried that!

It's another part of the test mentioned. I wobble at the first hurdle - sigh !

It is a tricky one! Is the next part to do it backwards?

Me neither, when I try standing on one leg in Pilates I have to stand sideways on to the wall so that I can touch the wall with one finger at least, then I don't get dizzy. Can't close my eyes in the shower either! My GP said I had vertigo!

Sorry to hear about your accident. As a therapist it sounds to me as if you have whiplash and accompanying stresses. I would suggest a Body Realigner (I can ask on my group if there is one in your area) or someone who does positional release or myofascial release. I am trained in Body Realignment so only have knowledge of this modality. For us BR people whiplash is simple to treat, painless and straightforward. (I once treated a client who had a whiplash injury for which she had been receiving treatment and it was suggested that she have surgery - we sorted it after a couple of sessions.) Good luck.
