London based, good endo or functional doctor recommendation please!

Can anyone recommend a good endocrinologist or functional medicine doctor in London please....I’ve just spent a fortune on one who didn’t listen, usual “but your results are in range....blah, blah” I’m desperate to find one that cares, if you are still having debilitating symptoms even if your blood results are in range!

I’m really struggling and feeling awful and pretty hopeless at the moment and just don’t know who to go to for help next....and don’t want to waste money I can’t afford on another disinterested specialist! Thankyou so much for any suggestions! X

Welcome to the forum

BEFORE seeing any specialist we ALWAYS recommend getting FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing privately FIRST

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking?

Do you have results you can add?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

You may need to get full Thyroid testing privately as NHS refuses to test TG antibodies if TPO antibodies are negative

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

If/when also on T3, make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3 £29 (via NHS private service )

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's.

Low vitamins are especially common with Hashimoto's. Food intolerances are very common too, especially gluten.

So it's important to get TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once .

The aim of Levothyroxine is to increase the dose slowly in 25mcg steps upwards until TSH is under 2 (many need TSH significantly under one) and most important is that FT4 is in top third of range and FT3 at least half way through range

NHS guidelines on Levothyroxine including that most patients eventually need somewhere between 100mcg and 200mcg Levothyroxine.

Also what foods to avoid (eg recommended to avoid calcium rich foods at least four hours from taking Levo)

All four vitamins need to be regularly tested and frequently need supplementing to maintain optimal levels

Low vitamin levels are extremely common and improving these can significantly reduce symptoms

If you have high thyroid antibodies then getting coeliac blood test before trying strictly gluten free diet highly recommended

The only functional medical dr I know of is dr Rangan Chatterjee who is based in Manchester who saw one of the members of the midlands thyroid support group that I run.

You could see a functional nutritionist, as still having symptoms cannot be rectified by drugs necessarily but by getting your gut health right and your diet and vitamins and minerals balanced.

I can recommend a couple who you can speak to online, not have to see.

Have you seen the thyroid secret docu series by dr Isabella Wentz? and read her books?

Are you gluten, dairy and soy free? Have you got rid of toxins? She explains all of this.

Happy to message you.

Sue

Dear Sue, thankyou very much, yes have spent a lot on seeing a nutritionist re my gut and I’m gluten free etc, it’s all very frustrating! If you could send me the name of the couple by personal message, I would very much appreciate it! Thankyou so much, Rachael x

We visited (name deleted by admin) ..yesterday.

As SlowDragon suggested we went armed with a full array of both NHS blood results from recent years and private medicheck results as suggested by the very knowledgable and helpful members of the forum. He has suggested further medicheck tests before he makes a full diagnosis but he was very thorough, respectful and booked 40 minute consultation lasted over an hour.

As per guidelines...please do not mention Dr by name. Please only do so by private message

I have sent the Dr name to Rachie1974 by private message
